Witness: Ponson wasn't drunk

According to a witness who was in the Vinoy hotel bar the night Sidney Ponson was reportedly out of control on the eve of a start against Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, the newest Yankees hurler wasn't loud and didn't appear drunk on May 25. "He was hanging out and not being loud," the witness told The Post before the Yankees' 10-0 victory over the Pirates yesterday. "Some other people he was with were loud but he wasn't. If he was guilty of anything it was being in there the night before he pitched." When Ponson, a Ranger at the time, got torched for 12 hits and five runs in five innings the next day against the Rays, his presence in the bar didn't look good. Ponson (4-1, 3.88 ERA) made two more starts - one win and one no-decision - for the pitching-poor Rangers, got into a disagreement with manager Ron Washington about the way he was being used, was designated for assignment on June 7 and released 10 days later.

sure they are. pitching for most clubs is thin. use him does OK use him again. fects up, dump him...

June 26, 2008  07:13 AM ET

He was pitching well for the Rangers when he was cut. And the Yanks got him for nothing. So why is it desperate?

He was on the Yanks before, and wasn't a problem.

Read the article clown, Ponson wasn't drunk. He had some issue with the manager, that's obvious. Again, Ponson was on the Yankees before and wasn't a problem.

Its desperate because for a team that prides itself on being holier than all others and the beacon of light in MLB,

And where the bleep do you get that from?

At the risk of striking a harmonious chord with Mr. Buford, I must concur. I find your comment to be scurrilous, prejudicial, unfounded, ludicrous, and nonsensical.

the yanks signing ponson is no different than the sox signing colon. Both are washed up, fat guys that don't take care of themselves. As long as the pay is low there is low risk. why do the yanks get beat up when the sox get praise??

Yeah. Watch your step, clown.

Anytime someone signs a pitcher the Rangers let walk away it is by definition desperate. I'm not saying it isn't worth the shot but for Friday's double header against the Mets the Yankees are pitching this bloated warthog and a 31 year old rookie. I'm going to need to start drinking around 11AM to get through this nonsense.

Me thinks you doth protest too much, clown.

June 26, 2008  09:27 AM ET

CLown, since when is a .500 team terrible?

Ponson is VERY LUCKY that pitching is so thin these days cause he really should be an ex-con right about now.

June 26, 2008  09:31 AM ET

So what? Ponson wasn't cut by the Rangers for being drunk that night, Ponson was cut for mouthing off in the clubhouse and being an all-around weasel. Good riddance and may he bring the same level of maturity to the Yankers clubhouse.

June 26, 2008  09:50 AM ET

If Ponson pitches for the Yankees, it will be one and done. The only way Ponson would continue with the Yankees on the MLB level is if he pitched damn near a no hitter. again, one and done. he is an emergency warm body only. They are hoping for five or six decent innings and then it is: "here's your coat; here's your hat don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out."

Why not add a couple of guys to the roster who come very cheap, and may throw a bunch of decent innings? I don't understand what all the hysteria is about.

Oh, that's right...it's the YANKEES signing him. Thus, it's the end of the world as we know it.

Yawn..................
