Leafs give Sundin weekend deadline

Cliff Fletcher is prepared to wait for Mats Sundin no longer than this weekend before the divorce is final and he makes free agent spending plans without the Maple Leafs' franchise scoring leader. While the betting is that Sundin will go elsewhere this season, the general manager has kept the door open a crack, even after granting the Montreal Canadiens exclusive rights to try and work a deal prior to unrestricted free agency starting Tuesday. The Leafs will keep something along the lines of a one-year, $7-million US no-trade deal in the drawer, though the growing feeling is that Sundin will out-wait the Leafs and Habs and go to the highest bidder in July.

With all the moves made in the last week by the Leafs Matts has his out. Rangers or Wings Matts...do it. Please not the habs.

He will probally leave..

June 26, 2008  08:52 AM ET

This sucks.

June 26, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Mats may be a fan favorite in Toronto but that team has been horrible and needs a complete overhaul. Good for Fletcher for having the balls to clean house like this.

I agree. It is tough to do this, but the firststep is in place...Mats to Vancouver

BETTMAN S**S

7 million US wasn't good the first time why would it be good the second time?

Maybe he wants to get paid in the Canadian dollar. I sure do...

June 26, 2008  10:25 AM ET

The deadline should have been 3 months ago. Get rid of him and spend the 7 million on some quality depth. I just can't wait to end this circus. There is no way he is going to accept a one year deal when he has virtually every other team is offering him two years. I am not a genius in math, but I know that much....

June 26, 2008  10:30 AM ET

I have to admit I like the recent moves by the Leafs... Buying out Tucker, waiving Raycroft and Wellwood.
I see a real commitment to build a winning team this year!
If they let Sundin go to go after another solid center, I might give them some positive thought tis year...

June 26, 2008  10:49 AM ET

The Wings might make room for him just to give Matts a crack at Stanley, like the Avs did with Raymond Bourque. This would be his last shot before he goes out for good. If they do, not only will they do him a favor but will also enhance their chances to repeat. I think Sundin will respond to that kind of challenge in the same way Bourque did.

June 26, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Hopefully he signs somewhere else. Sooner or later the Sundin era in Toronto has to end and theres no time like the present. If you're going to clean house you might as well clean out the whole place and not just bits and pieces here and there. Now if we could only get rid of McCabe....

June 26, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Yeah, the McCabe contract is ridiculous. I wish the NHL had the same system in place that MLB has, where the team wishing to trade a player can "eat" some of the salary in order to move him. The Leafs probably would have lots of team interested in McCabe at 3.5 - 4 million/season, but at 5 teams will just laugh it off. Thanks for the memories, Mr.Ferguson.

June 26, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Get rid of him. He's been a cancer on the Leafs since he arrived in 1994. Finally the Leafs can start to move forward again. I know that many Leaf fans like Mats but they see the world through rose coloured glasses. Imagine if we has a real captain how the fans would react. I'd nominate Matt Stajan as the new Leafs captain. I good riddance to this egotistical floater. The next time Mats Sundin throws a body check will be the first.

To me this would be the only logical thing for Sundin to do. The guy should be wanting a swan song to finish up on.

Hahaha boston, that's a hell of an avatar!

June 26, 2008  12:22 PM ET

Be Real. The Leafs are going to be horrible for the next three years, minimum. So let's all enjoy last place, because no decent free-agent is coming to Toronto to play alongside a group of stiffs, not if they can get similar money with any other team in the league. There may be light at the end of the tunnel, but it's a long tunnel, so brace yourselves for a couple of years of watching the Marlies struggle.

Hahaha boston, that's a hell of an idea! Sundin in Calgary?

June 26, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Sundin should have let himself be traded to the Detroit swedish red wings. He would have helped them win a Stanley Cup by sweeping Pittsburgh in 4 not 6 games.

Sundin to the HABS would be blasphemous!!!

June 26, 2008  12:38 PM ET

Mats will go wherever he can get the most pancakes. You heard it here first....
