Pistons downplay Davis trade

Joe Dumars wants to make big changes to the Pistons this off-season. But don't expect it to happen in tonight's NBA draft and probably not with Golden State. There was nothing imminent as of Wednesday evening, and, apparently, no truth to a report that the Pistons were talking to the Golden State Warriors about a trade involving Chauncey Billups, Rasheed Wallace, Baron Davis and Al Harrington. The two sides haven't even talked, according to a Pistons source.

they dont need baron davis they have stuckey they should trade for brand

Exactly. Whoever reported that Joe Dumars was going after Baron Davis was trying to elevate Dumars to the role of Almighty Emperor of the league, where he could get any player he wanted, whether he actually needs that player or not.
That type of God complex belonged to old GM's like Jerry Krause, from the Bulls of the 80's, but not to Joe Dumars.

The source of the story yesterday seemed shady at best. Given Dumar's promise to make changes, Pistons will be in the conversation for almost all big names this off-season... which is exactly what Joe wanted.

All I know is it makes for fun speculation and an exciting off-season as a Stones fan. Maybe after tonight we will have a better idea.

Too many PG if they get Davis and all PG play the same way.

Actually I'm glad it wasn't true, as this would only make the Warriors older, not better.

LOL

I know why Sheed's name is mentioned in every trade rumor but, why Billups, is it becasuse they believe Stuckey is ready or did he do something to piss Joe Du off?

Billups = Trade Value...

June 26, 2008  12:32 PM ET

Petey024 - I agree that it's somewhat confusing to understand why Dumars would want to trade Billups, since he's a relatively stable guy and doesn't have psychological problems like Rasheed.
However, here are 2 things that factor in:
- The improvement of Stuckey. Because Stuckey has shown that he's good enough to play as a starter, Dumars doesn't mind getting rid of Billups for a younger point guard who can back up Stuckey, or possibly even for a shooting guard or big man (once Rasheed is gone, they will need another big man anyway).
- Optimization of the guard positions. Dumars wants bigger guards who can play both point guard and shooting guard. Because Stuckey is ready to take over the point guard position, Dumars wants to trade Billups while he can still play and has trade value. Dumars can then use the money saved from Billups to get a bigger guard. Having been a star guard for the Pistons back in the late 80's, Dumars puts a lot of emphasis on creating a guard-oriented team. Therefore, he only wants the best players in the backcourt, and even though Billups is quite good, he will fine-tune the backcourt by trading for a larger guard.

Jay L.

You make strong points. But I wonder if he gets too long whether his team will be vulnerable to small ball teams that run and gun on him, especially West coast teams.

He better have some smaller, quick players on the bench.
