Heat thinking Mayo or Bayless

While Chicago Bulls General Manager John Paxson was talking Tuesday about what his team would do with the No. 1 overall selection in Thursday's NBA Draft, Heat President Pat Riley apparently still was working on his team's possibilities at No. 2. Having yet to publicly comment on his team's draft outlook since the end of the late-May draft camp in Orlando, Riley instead has been assessing his alternatives, with ESPN reporting early today that the Heat spent Tuesday working out Southern Cal guard O.J. Mayo and Arizona guard Jerryd Bayless.

he we go with the crazy Riley comments. let the feeding frenzy begin.

I doubt Riley is DUMB enough to pass on Beasley. Especially if he's talking about character issues... Mayo has more than he does... I wouldn't be surprised if Wade has made a call to Riley to tell him not to do anything stupid that's gonna make him opt out of his contract when the time comes....

Beasley would be a better fit for the Heat because of their low-post needs but DWade and Riles probably want Mayo and groom him to be their next point guard. Dwade is almost similar to Mayo that's why I don't understand the logic. DWade has PG skills and so does Mayo.

They will take Mayo

i agree they should take beasley...its a no brainer to me. the guy is a beast and will be productive playing on the blocks. i think he'll be a much better rebounder in the league than expected and we all know he can put the ball in the cup.

they should take beasley but i bet riley will be dumb

Thanks for keeping us updated, Captain Obvious.

This must be a slow news day. The Heat will either take Beasly (most likely) or make a huge deal with some other team for a player and draft picks.

The end.

I'm not so sure where Beasley fits. And that's Riley's problem. In the last 3 months, Beasley has gone from 6'10" to a legitimate 6'7. I don't see him dominating on the block, or being the ferocious rebounder he was in college. Once he realizes where he is, he's likely to become a jumpshooter. I don't trust Riley as far as I could throw him--but I don't see Beasley as answering any problems for the Heat, and Mayo isn't a point guard. If they want a point guard, I think they should draft one. The second pick is too high to draft a player you need to change. I think Mayo will soon find out the difference between USC and NBA.

I think the Heat are pretty convinced that they will acquire Boozer or Brand in the future.

i see your point on beasley but i have to disagree. i think his true height(whatever that may be) won't really effect the impact he will have in the league. i see him much more on the blocks than being converted to to SF. i've had the opportunity to really pay attention to his game and his touch is butter soft and he knows how to score in the paint. granted he won't be able to overpower the guys in the nba the way he did college but i do see his ability to play strong and with that comes the ability to be a good rebounder he positions himself quite well for such a young player. i'm not saying he'll be an immediate star but i do think he'll become an all-star someday. as far as what the heat need i'm not too sure but i believe in always taking the best available player and with rose looking like he's going to chitown you gotta take the next best guy whether he stays with your team or becomes part of a trade.

June 26, 2008  10:15 AM ET

for all the talk about how he isnt tall enough.from watching games this year he looks like he could be a david west, gooden, orr carlos boozer type of player.

he already has a better shotting touch then both of the big men when they came into the league. and i dont get where you have to be 7 foot to be a good rebounder. west, gooden, and boozer all average around 10 reb a game and they are about 6'8.

i just feel the bulls should take him over rose and mayo. he would fit better there giving them at least a low post scoring game.

June 26, 2008  10:37 AM ET

You can't pass on B-Easy... BUT Mayo's mid-range game is NBA ready now. He understand how to use picks and when he come off down screens he is a very good catch and shoot guy. He plays solid D and is capable of playing the PG position when needed (good passer not great).

I watched a ton of his games waiting to see if he was going to blow a gasket like advertised. Mayo dis-credited all the negitive things said about him coming out of HS.

June 26, 2008  10:51 AM ET

if Pat does not take Beasley, Pat obliously lost some brain cells.

June 26, 2008  11:11 AM ET

It was supposed to be a secret workout I heard but so much for that. They need to go ahead and take Beasley. Trade him later if you must but don't waste that pick not taking what many call one of only two sure things in the draft.

June 26, 2008  11:12 AM ET

Beasley does not fit the heat's needs. They have Haslem and Marion in the front court. Where does Beasley fit? Riles is not a big rookie guy and Marion and Haslem are proven veterans. Don't be surprised if Riles trades Beasley for a need position like PG or Center. It's interesting nobody has discussed the Heat trading up for Rose. Another possibility is the Heat trade for Heinrich since he is no longer the starting PG if Chicago takes Rose. As a Heat fan the trade I have recently heard I like the most is the Heat trading down to get Conley and another needed piece like Miller along with a rookie big with the later draft pick. Eventually, the Heat will acquire Brand to help with the front court. Riley has wanted him since the year of the Brand/Odom offer sheets.

June 26, 2008  11:13 AM ET

I agree they should take Beasley but would not be surprised if they take Mayo instead.

June 26, 2008  11:17 AM ET

keztoo:

who are you going to give up to get brand. and marion is a small forward playing out of positions. and haslem is a role player that brings rebounding. maybe they need a low post scorer like beasley instead of another PG that has to have the ball in his hands the whole time. so i guess what im trying to say is the heat need a low post scorer and beasley is a low post scorer. so how would that not work out.

June 26, 2008  11:33 AM ET

yes i wouldn't be surprised if riley passed on beasley! As a matter of fact, I'm almost 100 percent sure that they're taking mayo! He's been brought in too many times for workouts, so that tells u something right there!
