Pricey PSLs rock Giants fans

Over the next few years, New York-area fans will settle into several comfy, new, state-of-the-art sports palaces. Nice. But make no mistake: It will cost you. The latest evidence came Thursday, with the Giants' announcement they will sell personal seat licenses to help finance a $1.6-billion stadium they and the Jets are building in the Meadowlands. The news wasn't surprising, but it was a blow to many season-ticket holders unhappy with the notion of paying to preserve their right to pay for tickets. "I'm stunned," said Calvin Lang, 72, of East Hampton, who said he has had season tickets since 1960. "Gosh, I don't even know the correct word. It's .insane." Giants president John Mara agonized over the step, saying "it was not an easy decision for us," but he said there was no way to avoid it given the cost of the project. "We think and believe that this decision is necessary to secure the future of the Giants franchise for the next 40 years," Mara said.

Welcome to the new NFL. We had to do it in Philly. They do this because they know we will pay.

June 27, 2008  07:46 AM ET

You would think since 2 teams are playing in the stadium that the PSL's would not cost a single team stadium. Guess not

June 27, 2008  07:48 AM ET

Supposedly the Jets PSLs will be $50K! They are trying to get rid of the little fans, the ones that have had the tickets for generations and horde them. Now they will all be owned by corporate interests and ticket scalpers.

I feel bad for the people who's lives revolve around going to the games.

June 27, 2008  07:58 AM ET

*as much as a single team stadium.

June 27, 2008  08:04 AM ET

i still can't fathom how both new york teams play in jersey, yet are called new york teams. i know that jersey is getting paid, but damn.... offer them some cutbacks to become the jersey jets or giants...

June 27, 2008  08:08 AM ET

The teams offices are in NY, not NJ. The agreement says they have to be called the NY Giants or Jets, not NJ.

June 27, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Until people stop paying for them, this will continue. Stop saying your outraged and actually do something about it. Once people stop buying them, ownerships will get the message.

June 27, 2008  08:14 AM ET

I remember the old Madden games having the New Jersey Jets.

June 27, 2008  08:14 AM ET

Good luck with this garbage NY fans. Us Philly fans have been putting up with this for a few years now. It's simply another way to squeeze every penny out of the true die hard fans

June 27, 2008  08:15 AM ET

Troy. Great idea but we both know that'll never happen. We need our football and the owners knew that.

June 27, 2008  08:16 AM ET

Anyone who is "rocked" by this is an ignorant doofus who has not been following the NFL.

June 27, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Nobody "needs" football that bad. If you're dumb enough to pay for your right to pay that your fault. Sucker!!!!!!!!!!

June 27, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Zank you Pork!

June 27, 2008  08:30 AM ET

Well said son. If you dont like it then dont pay and see how prices go down...

In other news.....it is a happy day in Giantsland!

Finally, a worthy tread!

June 27, 2008  08:37 AM ET

We demand more Giants treads .....we be the universe and world champs afterall!!!

Thanks for sticking some hardcore fans. Who the hell is going to make all the noise when the D is holding on a 4th and 1.

June 27, 2008  08:39 AM ET

I meant stopping the 4th and 1.

June 27, 2008  08:50 AM ET

for that much $$$ you would think they would build a better looking and more unique stadium.......... besides the lighting changing colors from blue to green....lol

make it pretty like the Bucs, Colts, Seahawks, Cowboys new stadiums.....exc

June 27, 2008  09:55 AM ET

That's what winning a Super Bowl will do fo you...gives you the clout/cahonas to start ripping off your own fans...

June 27, 2008  10:07 AM ET

You can thank the Carolina Panthers for this idea. Looks great on taxpayer paper but it sucks for the "real fans"
