Potential A's-Rockies deal

The A's have been linked to Colorado reliever Brian Fuentes in recent reports, but Oakland, which leads the majors in ERA and has a full bullpen (with Joey Devine expected to come off the disabled list before the All-Star break), might not necessarily be in the market for more pitching, unless it is as part of a multi-team deal. What Oakland most likely is seeking is right-handed hitting, and the Rockies might decide to trade Matt Holliday at some point, though if they did move the outfielder, it would take at least several top young players to land him. Speedy center fielder Willy Taveras, who is having a subpar season, is very much available. The Phillies are believed to have had long-standing interest in Fuentes.

everyone on the rockies should be available. last season was such a fluke, but nobody can ever take that away from them.

They keep talking about trading Matt Holliday but they never say for who or what? May a large pizza? Come on!

*maybe

Holiday is by far their best player....if they move him they should gut the entire team and start from stratch

Interesting article. Not about Fuentes, and the trade rumors, but about the Trackman equipment. WOW. this can track and pin point release points, spin rates, where the pitch breaks and of course veloscity. So now teams need the pitching coash for the human touch, and a scientist/computer geek/technician type guy for actual technical stuff. This tech can also assist the batting coach. Boy baseball sure has changed since i was a kid. If they think videoing by the Pats was cheating, wow, what the heck is this going to be?

veloscity = velocity never mind a techician I need that hot teacher for my spelling

Holliday to the A's makes no sense- the A's trade guys right before theyre due big contracts, they dont acquire them. Also, look at Hollidays home/road splits over his career. Coors Field, humidor and all, has been in the words of Sammy Sosa "very, very good to him". He's a great young OF and supposedly a great clubhouse presence, but if his road stats are any indication, he would see a srious dip in his numbers playing anywhere outside Coors, esepcailly in that national park they call a stadium in Oakland.

After stockpiling young players all offseason long, why would Billy Beane be interested in sending them to Colorado just for a Right handed bat? This story defies logic.

June 27, 2008  10:53 AM ET

Agreed. Holliday ain't going to Oakland. Neither is Fuentes. Colorado has improved in recent weeks, and the NL West ain't exactly locked up by anyone. If Tulowitzki gets his act together, the Rockies could still win it.

The Rockies were not a fluke last year. They have some really good players on their roster, most of them young.

this does not sound like a move the A's make. They trade players for prospects...

June 27, 2008  12:40 PM ET

A's will not be able to meet Holiday's contract demands in 2010. Lets be real... he is going to a Major Market (ala Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox that have farm systems and $$$)

The Cardinals need Brian Fuentes. He could solve a lot of the problems they've had in their 'pen lately.

This would not seem like a dumb article if it was 2012, when the A's move to their new park. But oh well, A's won't trade for anyone unless he's really good. And Holliday, while a good, is nothing to marvel at away from home.
