Inside Mayo-to-Memphis deal

Posted: Friday June 27, 2008 06:09AM ET

Five hours after more than 2,000 draft-party participants cheered the arrival of new Timberwolf O.J. Mayo, their NBA hometown team made a midnight deal that reshaped its roster. The Wolves dealt Mayo's draft rights along with Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker, Greg Buckner and their contracts to Memphis for the rights to Kevin Love, swingman shooter Mike Miller, forward Brian Cardinal and center Jason Collins. The dramatic deal long after the revelers left the team's Target Center practice facility rids the Wolves of Jaric's bloated contract, Walker's problematic presence and delivers a uniquely skilled 6-9 rookie forward and a deft veteran three-point shooter.

It's Not!

So, both the New England Patriots and Memphis Grizzlies have guys named Mayo. My head is already starting to hurt with all the bad puns from the guys at ESPN.

When their fans hear about this, they may tear down the Target center!! OK City might have 2 teams...

Why would anyone trade for the cancer Mayo?

"Boy that Mayo can really spread the ball around"

LOL

Explain in detail how OJ Mayo is a caner. Dude hasn't played a single nba game. Don't get wrapped up in everything BSPN says.

And it begins,
1. Mayo assaulted a referee
2. Mayo arrested for possession of marijuana
3. May breaking a teammates jaw
4. Agent hiring controversy

I don't think Kevin Love is going to sell tickets. Portland managed to pull off every trade perfectly while Minnesota will never threaten Portland in the division.

How can anyone as incompetent and inept as the Memphis front office remain employed? Someone has to be paying them under the table to sabotage this team.. First they trade Pao Gasol for a pair of sneakers--then trade Mike Miller and Kevin Love for a 32 year old Walker, and a remaining $21 million due Marko Jaric.. Great; maybe they can move up in next years lottery.

i can't believe that mchale still has his job. he has to have some pics of the owner doing something he shouldn't be.

NY stinks. The same clowns that ripped philly for booing mcnabb we probaly the ones booing their draft pick

We had 7 guards as of last night? Knew one or two were gone but I didn't think Mayo was one of them. Glad we got rid of Jaric but now how will I stalk Adriana Lima. Still trying to figure that one out.

I was kind of waiting for this kid to get into trouble at USC because of the stuff he was accused of, NEVER happened. So just maybe he has gotten his act together. The agent issue would have never been an issue IF he was forced to go to school.

BTW: I'm sure you thought T.O. was a bad apple until he started to help your Cowboys win games....ditto Randy Moss.

The only thing TO was guilty of was being a bad teammate. He never assaulted anyone, broke federal drug laws and defrauded the NCAA and the good name of collage basketball.

Any deal that gets rid of Antoine Walker works for me.

Someone seriously needs to kill McHale. There was already no fan base last year, and now they draft a guy I wanted who is going to be a star, and they trade him for Jackie Moon and three other white guys, horrible! And now they trade Jaric of all times! He just gets engaged to Adriana Lima and they trade him! She would have been the second biggest draw at Twolves games!

Oh yeah, and Mayo is such a bad guy. THe only thing you may hold against him is the ref incident, and you can't, watch this video and tell me the ref doesn't call two phantom technicals and take a dive.

Memphis dumped two bad contracts Collins and Cardinal and Walker will be bought out for half his bloated salary before he ever sets foot in Memphis. This trade boils down to Mayo and Love and Memphis clearly wins this one! Hey Sota Fans get used to seeing this for 82 games!

Never did I say T.O. committed any crime. I said he was "perceived" as a bad apple, like Moss, but we tend to forget when those bad apples are helping your team win.

Don't fool yourself, MOST colleges and pro sports really don't care about the character of players. It all about the bottom line.

My point is you have made a judgment call on a KID......maybe it has taken him a little longer to mature than it did you.

IF we had said we can't have an alcoholic leading this country....then George Bush would never been president.

Thought Memphis should have gotten more for Mike Miller. I guess it all depends on what kind of player O.J. Mayo turns out to be. Frankly, it depends how quickly he can ketchup, if he can cut the mustard, if so Grizzlies will relish this day, causing fans to cheese. Otherwise, this trade is bologna and Memphis would look like a bunch of wieners.

I don't understand this trade.

Now Memphis gets Employee #8.......hope the Grizz fans like an overweight power forward with a fondness for chucking up ill-advised 3's
