Why the Bucks parted ways with Yi

Now, instead of having to wait for Yi Jianlian to mature and hope that Bobby Simmons stays off injured reserve for three consecutive games, new coach Scott Skiles has Richard Jefferson's versatility at both ends to enhance Michael Redd, Andrew Bogut, Mo Williams and Charlie Villanueva. Though everyone but the Aussie center is being shopped to some degree.

Hummm...lets see they added vetern strenght and depth and gave up two big questions.

June 27, 2008  06:35 AM ET

You have to remember that Yi Jianlian did not want to be in the small market of Milwaukee Bucks anyways.

Thanks for the stupid comment of the day. Has it occurred to you that NJ is a small market essentially? With 7,000 fans in the seats every night. 12,000 when they are title contenders??

Actually New Jerseys Asian population is 14% and Milwaukee's only 3% which makes it a bigger marketing opportunity to sell Yi as a face of the team like Yao Ming.

so much for joe alexander practicing his mandarin.

How many All-Star votes will Yi Jianlian get this year?

June 27, 2008  08:31 AM ET

And this is why the Bucks struggle. Draft a player no one thinks you should, and trade him after one season. I like Jefferson, but then spend two draft picks on his backup? With Memphis' star hypenated guard still on the board in Round 2?

June 27, 2008  08:43 AM ET

The Bucks decision making is really bad. No-way you draft a kid as high as they drafted Yi and trade him the next season. If they had done their homework they would have known he was a top 15 pick last year.

Who cares about marketing to a certain ethnic market! I want to win. Richard Jefferson is a proven NBA player. He replaces a soft perimeter player. The Bucks need to get tougher, and they just did. Besides they dumped Bobby Simmons contract. If they manage to get rid of Dan Gadzuric John Hammond gets my vote for exec of the year!!!

You obviously haven't been there. Otherwise you'd know that the additional 14 people that show up still leave the area about 6,000 seats short of being full.

Its marketing and economics 101. Do you remember when the Chinese had reservations on Yi going to a city with a low Asian population? For Yi and Chinese basketball, New Jersey is a far better economic choice then Milwaukee.

June 27, 2008  09:44 AM ET

What difference does it make, he won't help either team win a championship anytime soon . . . . .

Forget about New Jersey! This team will soon become the Brooklyn Nets. New York, New York! All of you out there in the cornfields must not be aware of is?

June 27, 2008  10:19 AM ET

The Bucks should have known if Yi Jianlian was going to play for them or not before they used the pick. It was obvious that he didn't intend to stay with the Bucks.

The NJ draw is obviously based on the fact that they expect the stadium in Brooklyn to be built and they intend to draw the NYC Chinatown crowd (which is sizable).

This is marketing not basketball and I don't think it will work.

June 27, 2008  10:40 AM ET

Yi is not Yao (marketing wise). Yao was the first chinese in the league, the number 1 pick, and he plays for a contender (I am exaggerating here). So Yao definitely gets more popularity and marketing than Yi.

Having said that, Yi will be a bust (an average player at best) as we look back 5 years from now and Yao will never live up to his potential. His all star appearances are blessed by the league because of the overseas marketing policy that Stern is trying.

Jefferson is a player. Yi and Simmons aren't much. Milwaukee finally made a good trade.

They still need an inside player to help Bogut and Villanueva. Haslem?

As a Bucks fan I gotta say i love this trade. Jefferson is a proven player. Yi was not. This dispute about asian population means nothing as far as Yi being a better player. Meat and potatoes is that the bucks ridded themselves of an over paid underachiever and a big question mark. Who cares about draft position as that's all history. Bucks make a bad draft with Yi last year? Maybe, but who cares, that's long over now. Great trade Hammond and a good way to start things off. The other thing not mentioned is the Bucks no longer need to deal with meddling China, who are HUGE meddlers.
