Pistons' little-known draft pick
At No. 32, Pistons president Joe Dumars selected someone who was so off the radar, he wasn't even included in the NBA draft media guide. Welcome Alabama-Birmingham's Walter Sharpe, a 6-foot-9, 245-pound forward who was academically ineligible for part of last season, suffers from narcolepsy and was arrested last fall, along with four teammates, for disorderly conduct after a fight at a dance club. Dumars knew all about those red flags, though. He picked Sharpe after conversations convinced him that they don't tell his full story. His UAB coach, Mike Davis, called him "one of the most misunderstood kids in the country," in a January story in the Birmingham News. The article went on to say that Sharpe suffers from narcolepsy, which impacted his academic performance. Dumars said Sharpe was only diagnosed with the sleep disorder five months ago and is on medication to control it.

Seems to me Sharpe isn't the only one that needs to wake up. Maybe Joe could borrow some of his drugs.

Here I was sitting at home waiting for some exciting draft day moves by Joe Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuumars. After all he said he was tired of things and ready to shake up the roster. So what happens? He trades down for additional second round picks. Say what? LOL

it's feast or famine with the pistons in the draft -- either they wind up with a total stiff like Darko or a steal like Prince or Stuckey. but this is curious to say the least given that Mario Chalmers and Chris Douglas-Roberts were still on the board at 32. This guy better pan out or we've only heard the beginning of the sleepwalking jokes.

With the game on the line Sharpe has the oppurtunity to take the game winning shot.
Sharpe breaks through the full court press with the game clock winding down, this young rookie that everyone doubted is going to be the unsung hero of the game. HE TAKES IT TO HALF COURT GEARING UP FOR THE GAME WINNING SHOT THE FANS ON THE EDGE OF THEIR SEAT AND ....... UM .......
It seems ladies and gentlemen that Sharpe has fallen asleep in the middle of the Detroit Piston logo.. WHAT A MOOVEEE!!!!

Wow, you critics of Dumars really are stupid. Look at any draft year and you'll see that for good teams, most late 1st round picks or 2nd round picks do not even make the squad the following season. Instead they get shuffled off to Europe or the development league. The Pistons have stockpiled some young talent (Stuckey, Maxiell and Johnson will all be long-term impact players in the league, yet each took some time to develop.) At the spots the Pistons picked, Dumars probably didn't even see a better prospect than either Samb or Afflalo, two young players that get little floor time, but whose upside the Pistons are still investing in. Since Dumars didn't have a high enough draft pick to get immediate impact players for his team, the smart thing to do was avoid a 1st round pick's guaranteed contract (which hits the team's salary cap) + stockpile draft picks for the future. He also landed another high-risk/high-potential development project with a very low draft pick, which was about the only thing of value he could have gotten out of this draft. A+ GM work Joe - never mind the naysayers!

I love how you morons are draft experts. Dumars, who has built a successful team, spent days with Sharpe, yet somehow you all know better.
He wanted Sharpe at 29, instead he trades into the second where he can spend less money and grab another pick. So, he gets two possible studs along with Sharpe and plays them in Europe for a while. As far as I can tell -- and I'm not an expert like you all are -- it was a move worth making.

My question is, if noone else knew about him, why not just invite him to training camp & let him earn a roster spot. If he wasn't listed, how would other teams be willing to draft him? This dude's agent is a genius!!
