Rams eyeing return to L.A.?

There are rumors that the owners of the Rams are looking at Los Angeles as a destination in about seven years, when an escape clause in the Rams' current 30-year deal kicks in: The Rams have to be in the upper 25% of stadium revenues; otherwise ownership is free to move, despite having 10 years left on the lease. Rams owner Georgia Frontiere moved her team from Anaheim to St. Louis after the 1994 season, because the city offered her the keys to the city's new domed stadium, which was built as part of a convention center. The stadium is just 13 years old, but with new stadiums coming on board in East Rutherford, Indianapolis, and Texas and the opening of big revenue-producing facilities in Houston, Massachusetts, Detroit, and Arizona, the Rams' ownership will surely no longer be in the top eight by 2015.

They need to move the Packers to LA, it would bring in more money to the NFL since Greenbay can hardly afforded to pay the players salaries. Bring it GB fans :)

as a native southern californian, i shudder at the thought of the lambs coming back to so cal and having to use any taxpayer money to bring those ingrates back.

Football doesn't belong in LA. i think that was already proven. The uppidy residents are to busy with Lypo and Botox

The NFL does not HAVE to have the Rams, or, any team for that matter, in Los Angeles. Thats already been proven. Instead of going back to L.A., why not try a city that'd make them a priority? Memphis, Birmingham, San Antonio, Sacramento, Orlando, etc.

S.L. Rams to L.A. Rams? Sounds good to me!

L.A. Packers has a nice ring to it too!

L.A. Vikings? No! It doesn't sound right! They'll have to pick a different name!

Crusader - I agree with you....if you're going to put a team somewhere, put it in one of those markets, and not LA........

One can dream I guess. I mean all they have to do is get all those "owners" to agree... shouldn't be a problem right?

June 27, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Why not? Someone is going to eventually realize that LA is sitting there waiting.

June 27, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Yo, Hank, the Packers made $21.4M in PROFIT for the 2007 season. In 2006 they were ranked 17th in the league for net worth and revenue. LA has had two chances to host a football team, dismal failures at both. They don't deserve a team.
But not to worry, since The Packers belong to the city of Green Bay and not to some specious, fly-by-night "owner" they won't be going anywhere, EVER.

June 27, 2008  09:54 AM ET

There is a reason LA is sitting there waiting.......

June 27, 2008  10:00 AM ET

LA You had 2 chances and blew them both. So if you HAVE to move a team how about trying a new city

June 27, 2008  10:01 AM ET

"Rams eyeing return to L.A."

As they say blandly on Rodeo Drive, "quelle surprise."

I agree i think San Antonio would be a great market for a football team...Also to take into thought is what about Oklahoma City, look how they embraced teh Hornets when they came can you imagine how they would embrace a football team especially since Oklahoma is a football state. O.C Rams or S.A Rams has a nice ring to it...but I would prefer something like S.A Bandido's just suits the area better...

GOOOOOOOOO TEXANNNNNNNNNNS!!!

"San Antonio would be a great market for a football team"

How about Puerto Rico or Hawaii?

Dude, LA is the second biggest TV market in the US with revenues that are unmatchable anywhere else in the States. It's not for the love of the fans that the NFL would sanction a team's move from, say, STL to LA, it's greed, the fact that a huge untapped market is lying there. LA is so big, the Rams - and I think if any team moves it will probably be the Rams (sorry TenRings) - will fill a new football stadium in Irwindale.

Hey "what's cookin'"
Where's that picture coming from. Jesus.

Regardless the Packers would benefit in being the number 2 television market (Pop. 11,789,487) in the US then in Green bay (Pop. 279,485). I know this will never happen, but it would benefit the NFL and I would never hear the phrase "frozen tundra" again.

June 27, 2008  10:35 AM ET

How about Hawaii?
DCruiser | 06/27/08, 10:26 AM

With fuel prices they way they are the teams would need to be backed by an oil shiek or P.Diddy.

June 27, 2008  10:45 AM ET

That they would even think about moving the team back to L.A. is proof that Georgia moved them to St. Louis for bullsh*t reasons. If she had kept a strong product on the field attendance would never have dipped in Anaheim which was her alleged reason for moving the team. If the Jags don't beat the Rams to the punch I'm all for the move.
