Cleveland looks to lock up Sabathia

According to a major-league executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was discussing a player not on his team, the Cleveland Indians are making a last-ditch attempt to sign ace C.C. Sabathia to a contract extension before trading him. There are major obstacles to signing Sabathia. Negotiations halted in spring training, and Sabathia has said he does not want to work on a deal during the season. And the smaller-market Indians are not interested in matching Johan Santana's $137.5 million, six-year contract with the Mets.

If the Indians lock up CC, then there will be only 1,256 players left that the Cubs are rumored to be looking at....

June 27, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Then what will T&R put up everyday? This is a loss to the community.

June 27, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Thank God. Then the Yanks don't have to waste $$$ on him.

buford you wish the Yankees had a pitcher like Sabathia bro, Let me know when hughes, kennedy, or chamberlain amounts to more than a big pile of s{}iT. He probably will re-sign with the tribe w/ a Roy Halliday or Jake Peavy type contract. His agents may be about the last cent, but I think CC will step up and tell them to get a deal done because this is where he wants to be

TenRings, perhaps the Cards should be looking at players themselves - namely some bullpen help - instead of worrying all the ways the Cubs are looking to improve themselves as a team.

I guess you haven't seen Joba pitch lately domdawg. The other 2 are injured.

June 27, 2008  12:53 PM ET

Spalding - I wasn't commenting on the Cubs or what they are doing...I was commenting on the myriad of T&R posts that deal with players the Cubs are rumored to be looking at. There's been a ton of them in the last month or so....

As far as the Cards go - I'm be willing to entertain ANY rumors that would tie into fixing the Cards bullpen problem.

You can have Jason Marquis back if you want. We're done with him. I can't believe we gave that guy 3 years and $21 mil.

Tell you what - we'll give you Marquis back, you give us Todd Wellemeyer back.

Deal?

(And you're right about the rumors. Playing the Orioles the past three days brought about 1,000 new Brian Roberts rumors.)

Didn't Johan Santana sing "Black Magic Woman"?

I was going to say the samr thing Slinky...

I saw Johan on jones beach a long time ago, in a Summer lightening storm, they covered the speakers with plastic and continued on. It was great. I am sure glad Johan still gets time to tour. Are you sure that wasn't Carlos?

Pretty sure -- I think he pitches for the Angels.

LOL! Spalding - hold on, I need a minute. No....Marquis is the LAST guy I want back on the Cardinals. The guy has no heart or stomach for big games....I couldn't believe it either when the Cubs signed him last year.

And NO.....Wellemeyer for Marquis......no way........ You could give us Zambrano for nothing, and I'm not sure I'd take him if Marquis was included...... I could go on and on, but I'm a lifelong Cards fan, and I have never been so happy to have anyone off the roster than I was when Marquis left.

I also hear that the tribe misses trot nixon's leadership and lack of productivity.

One thing I read yersterday that I found interesting is if the Indians do trade Sabathia the team interested better be ready to fork up at least 2 front line prospects. If Sabathia should leave at the end of the season via free agency that is what the Indians would be awarded... 2 additional 1st round draft pick.

The story continues to say the Tampa Bay Rays could be the the best team to trade with since they are loaded in the minors and when Sabathia leaves at the end of the year Tampa would then receive 2 extra 1st round draft picks.
