Canadiens impress Sundin

Mats Sundin was to talk with his agent J.P. Barry and Montreal general manager Bob Gainey yesterday in what was expected to be a decision-making day. It would have been the second such discussion this week. The Habs, who gained Toronto's approval for negotiating rights with Sundin until the July 1 free agent period starts, hope Sundin will be part of their 100th anniversary celebrations next season -- if they can sign him. However there was no word out of the Sundin camp yesterday. The Leafs also indicated they received no word from their captain. Sundin left his initial talk with Gainey highly impressed, but remains non-committal, still deciding if he wants to play next season at all before giving an answer to the Canadiens.

Well, Sundin started his NHL career in Quebec. Maybe he wants to finish it there? Me thinks Detroit is a much better fit, if they will have him!

I hope the 3 mil they offered him was impressive. If he doesn't like it he can take Jagr's russian contract offer.

June 28, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Sundin makes me sick.

June 28, 2008  11:59 AM ET

Me too. Sick I tell ya

Sundin is doing everything to hurt the Leafs. Enough with the coy hero thing. Toronto got nothing for him at the trade deadline and will get nothing for him as he moves on. He's simply a selfish player who doesn't want to ease Toronto fan's cup angst. The Leafs and Toronto are better off without him. Let's get players here who want to play here to win, for glory and for civic pride.

June 28, 2008  12:42 PM ET

Sundin has hurt Toronto by not agreeing to a trade at the deadline. He wants to hurt Toronto by walking away and leaving the team with nothing. Does he really care about Toronto and the Leafs? He's acting as if it is all about him. It is not. It is about the city, the fans, the old fashioned belief in glory and maybe the need to feel that the great days can return to the fallen kingdom. We need champions here and not just the kind who raise the cup. He doesn't understand that Toronto fans view the players not as guys working in the city, but as civic-minded heroes who will restore the city's pride. Good for Fletcher. He's trying to bring the cup back here even if it takes another ten years.

Agreed with all of the above. Sundin has lost all my respect, unless he just retires or goes back to the leafs.
Bertuzzi could still be a good power forward the leafs need, and is far cheaper than Mats.

Disagreed. Sundin got nothing from Toronto (not even fans' respect as your example shows) over 14 seasons within the organization. He was about to be traded at the deadline despite his NTC. If the Leafs had agreed to NTC and after several months tried to move him -it was them who showed disallegiance. When you sign a job contract and afterwards your boss forces you to agree to an unfovarable deal, then you are not the person to blame, in terms of justice .

Does anyone care about sundin or the leafs ? Listen up leaf fans your team is gonna suck for a decade while they try fix the mess that is long expensive contracts that have no trades on em' . So count your stars somebody ( Sundin ) is gonna leave town with out having to be bought out ! Go Oilers

Glad to see I'm not the only fan who's nauseated by Mr. 70 Something Points.

June 28, 2008  06:34 PM ET

Overstayed his welcome in the league has he. A liability he is at anything over 2.5 million.

bostongm:
I like your analogy of the Pronger situation. Remember, Pronger helped the Ducks win the Cup. Maybe he will do the same for the Habs. By the way, why the he// would he sign with a Western club? He has real estate holding in the Toronto area, so why would he go out west. I still think that the Habs have the inside track, with the Wings next for that reason.

7 mil a yr for "your" star player... team and scoring leader.... it might only be 70-80 points but its still more then the rest of the team... any leaf fan that can honestly say that mats wasnt a true maple leaf and an outstanding representative of the city of toronto and the leaf organization wasnt watching.... hes had his slumps.... but he was always theyre best player since the gilmore days... and the leafs gave montreal permission to talk to him.... he didnt go asking for it... and maybe that to mats was a slap in the face because he wanted to come back..... i doubt hes considering to go elsewhere because of the fans... i think hes going because management and ownership... if you want to blame someone go knock on the acc door and ask to speak to the owner... afterall theyre paying mccabe 6 mill and complaining about paying mats 7...

June 28, 2008  09:27 PM ET

Hey boston gm, WRONG ! The way the leafs have sqwandered away draft pick to bring in bums ( owen nolon and andrew raycroft ) just to name two they really have no young talent in the minors and all these no trade guys don't allow them to trade for any picks or prospects also getting rid of kyle wellwood was a little premature and dumb as they just let him go for nothing . they aren't gonna be good in 2-3 or even 5 years down the road .

June 28, 2008  09:27 PM ET

I just wish he would decide and move on. It's depressing to see this - I believed in you, Mats!

Bostongm, why'd you have to mention PRONGER? lol

June 28, 2008  09:30 PM ET

PS : It looks like Cliff Fletcher is gonna be the GM there till he's 100 ! wait a minute isn't he already ? Okay till he's 150 !

June 28, 2008  09:36 PM ET

As for Pronger......its the same situation there Oilers Guy!!

bostongm |

Elucidate, please? What's the same situation where bgm? Don't forget I am a novice :)

June 28, 2008  10:06 PM ET

When pronger left the oilers and he was villified for it.
bostongm

Yes I knew that bit bgm. He was villified by me along with everyone else. I thought there was more to your comment, that's all. Pronger S***s! (to steal Spiny's tagline for a minute).

June 28, 2008  10:12 PM ET

Sorry Boston dude they can't even figure out who's gonna be the General Manager in Toronto let alone put a respectable team together . It's not looking good for the maple laughs.

June 28, 2008  11:01 PM ET

I doubt Sundin will go to Montreal, but I think it woud be hilarious if he did! I don' t thinkt that the fans in Toronto would ever forgive him.

If I were Gainey I would focus my energies on Hossa and Malone.

Sundin just do it!!!!!
