Tressel crushing Rodriguez?

The Daily News reports Ohio State's recruiting victories of late have been all the more sweet because they've come at the expense of rival Michigan. Ohio State coach Jim Tressel has gone head-to-head with new Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez for seven recruits and has landed six: linebacker Dorian Bell and running back Jordan Hall from Pennsylvania; defensive end Melvin Fellows, offensive lineman Corey Linsley and defensive lineman Adam Bellamy from Ohio; and receiver James Jackson from Michigan. Massillon defensive back Justin Turner kept Rodriguez from being shut out.

Of course he is winning. The writing has been on the wall for years. Michigan is not the program some think it to be. It is only the third best in the Big Ten and everyone knows it. Michigan fans are secretly bracing for two to three down seasons with a Motor City Bowl bid being the best possible scenario during that time and a four and eight record in 2008. OSU owns this series right now and that will not change until Rodriquez's successor is in place for the 2011 season at the earliest.

Why is SI spending so much time on the laughing stock conference of the NCAA? These teams need to beat someone other then each other.

That just shows that RR is a big F'N loser.

Yes, Tressel is doing his best Mr. Tryzik impersonation (Kids in the Hall) and crushing the head of Rodriguez.

There is no doubt that Ohio state has received the verbals from a group of very talented young men and most likely will end up with a top 3 if not #1 recruiting class in the country.

Michigan has recruited a handful of the same guys and landed just one in a head to head battle (JT TURNER from OH).

RR is also going after players that OHIO would never go after, ie the smaller slot receiver types that will run thru the legs of many:P

At the end of the day, what really matters is how these kids play at the college level. On paper, OSU has out recruited Michigan and most other schools in the nation. But lets wait to see how these kids pan out after a few years. Texas always gets the best in the Southwest and hasn't really been inconsistent with how well they have done.

And since many of the Buckologists on here (think Scientologist) have a problem understanding what I type do to their knee jerk reactionary way, my comment is that OSU is beating Michigan in recruiting head to head with players both are vying for. Comprende?

this is michigan... they will be back and give ohio state problems...... mr tressel needs to concentrate on winning the big games... michigan will always be competitive..... just being realistic........GO BUCKEYES!

4vrroyal....

a buckeye fan being realistic? OMG man, did you really write that? Are you taking your meds this time??? :P

June 28, 2008  11:46 AM ET

all of this press and this talk, it what happened in the late 90's when OSu was supposed to beat UM, then didnt, I hope this is different, Michigan is like a wounded dog right now and we know what happens if you mess with a wounded dog

June 28, 2008  11:48 AM ET

xxx84xxxx,

I thought Michigan was a wounded stinky weasel??? :P

Let's be realistic here folks. This IS Michigan. Although I don't personally believe that Rodriguez is the right fit for Michigan (any more than I believe Minnesota made the right choice of coaches), Michigan is and always will be talent heavy. Things are cyclical in football, as we all well know. I love my Buckeyes, but one thing I've learned is you NEVER EVER EVER underestimate the Michigan football program. Carr may have been hesitant to change (much like Tressel in big games) and it cost them. Rodriguez may not be the right kind of change but one thing that doesn't change is the talent level Michigan attracts. Anyone remember a few years ago when OSU beat Miami with a non-ranked recruited class? I know my fellow Bucks may slam me, but the realistic ones among us respect the Wolverines and respect the rivalry.

It is way too early to say anything. This next season will likely be a bad one for UM, as it would for almost any school with a new coach installing a completely new offense. In a few years, who knows. I can't imagine that OSU and UM would be going after too many of the same guys, particularly on offense, given the huge differences in the playing styles.

Also, if I was a recruit right now I would probably prefer OSU. They have a good coach who has his system entrenched. Michigan has a new coach running a new system, and no one really knows how it is going to work out.

June 28, 2008  12:02 PM ET

just being realistic..... osu needs to play better... they need to go out to L.A and play a very good game... to put the speclation to rest... all the haters need to just ****.... ohio state will beat any sec team facing them this year..... this is one on the most talented teams in years.... we will see....it all starts on sept 13th

June 28, 2008  12:06 PM ET

4vrRoyal, just curious about your confidence level re: the SEC teams. I hope you're right, I really do, but looking at both Florida and Georgia this year, they look pretty good right now. Do you have that much confidence in OSU's ability or do you doubt the SEC's strength this season? How do you feel about USC?

June 28, 2008  12:20 PM ET

well, i live in orlando.. thats all you here down here. how much the gator fans hate ohio state and running their mouth.... it getts old.. you know gator fans didnt have a problem with ohio state with them until they beat us in 06.. now that they have beat us once and ohio state seems to be struggling against sec teams.... i dont know .. i just reall y hope this year ohio state destroys a sec team....

usc is going to be tough.. but with usc shaky qb situation... i think ohio state has a competitive adv.. usc o line is rebuilding this year... ohio state will put pressure on sanchez..... i think ohio state will come oout with a win but its going to be close....

i am actually more worried about the game after usc.... troy

troy is known for beating big time schools.(mizz, arkansas), they also run that spread offense that ohio state seems to have problems with.... hopefuly ohio state comes out of usc healthy and rolls over troy....we will see what happends

June 28, 2008  12:21 PM ET

Tressel is a class act. I can't stand Rod.

June 28, 2008  12:22 PM ET

OSU can never win against an SEC team unless it is Miss. State or Vandy, otherwise, they get smacked AGAIN.

June 28, 2008  12:24 PM ET

see what i mean... like this clown right here..... undefeated your an idiot for posting such a message....moron

June 28, 2008  12:31 PM ET

its all good you are entitled to your opinion....however, what are you going to say when it happends and teh buckeyes get that monkey off their back.. you sec fans act like you have better talent.. not true... you planned better... ohio state was out coached..... this will be the year that ohio state beats an sec team and wins their 2nd natl title in 6 years..... with all teh recruites coming in.. you haters might want to get used to seeing the buckeyes in the title game......GO BUCKEYES

June 28, 2008  12:45 PM ET

See, I like Tressel, but the fact is the SEC is the best conference in the nation because of the talent it pulls in. Call me a homer, but our conference is quicker and stronger than any others. While the Big 12 is catching up, there is no debate. The SEC is the best.

June 28, 2008  12:59 PM ET

Undefeated, I happen to agree with you that the SEC has been the best conference for the last few years (particularly last year). I also agree with you about the Big 12. Like the point I made earlier though, everything is cyclical man. Overall, SEC teams have in fact beaten OSU. However, the Big Ten holds a winning record against the SEC. I'm really sick of seeing this battle played out really, and can't wait for OSU to get the monkey off it's back. It'll happen, so remember when that Big Ten fans become as obnoxious as SEC fans.
