Boozer downplays Heat rumors

Much musing has been made recently about the Heat making a possible move for Jazz power forward Carlos Boozer if the latter were to opt out of the final year of his contract after the 2008-09 NBA season. At Saturday's mini-camp debut of the 2008 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team in Las Vegas, Boozer wasn't in a talking mood about last week's rumblings involving the Heat, but Jazz/USA teammate Deron Williams was a willing contributor to conversations. After next season, Boozer can opt out of the final year of his current six-year, $68 million contract with the Jazz and negotiate a potential six-year deal worth an estimated to $136 million. "He's 26 years old, why wouldn't he?" asked Williams.

Everyone downplays rumors...

I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him...his word means nothing

Remember that the guy jumped from a verbal agreement with Cleveland so fast it made Bron's head spin. Cleveland hasn't recovered yet. Boozer will draw interest from several teams.

June 29, 2008  10:30 AM ET

Yeah, Boozer would jump for the money....I have no doubt about that after what he did to the Cavs.

June 29, 2008  10:51 AM ET

SHOSHOSHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWE ME THE MONEY!

June 29, 2008  10:52 AM ET

The thing with the Cavs was a verbal agreement that was under the table and not legal because it was before the deadline of official talks. The NBA should and probably would have fined the Cavs if the deal went down in the first place because it was before the deadline.

It never looked like the Cavs organization was that bitter about it anyway so the fans need to pull the stick out of their crack and realize that players are playing for a job and want money.

Hopefully Boozer doesnt leave Utah next season but he definately could, the fact is that the Jazz can offer just as much money as any other team.

Boozer knew that Lebron would be the face of the Cavs franchise as well, everyone knew that and Boozer wanted a chance to shine on his own.

boozer is a great no2 that means no2 money (big money yes but if wants a max deal he goes elsewhere)

June 29, 2008  11:30 AM ET

DID I JUST READ 6 YEARS 136 MILLION? mY LORD that is ridicilous for Carlos Boozer?

June 29, 2008  11:35 AM ET

I guess after the draft, there is no current NBA news to report. Boozer is right not to discuss the 2010 season. The Desert Morning News should do the same.

WRONG!!
It doesn't matter that it was done before the deadline and was "under the table". Whether it's the NBA, or IBM, or McDonald's, or any other professional organization, you don't give a verbal commitment for an employment decision and then back out.
That's called being unprofessional and being a traitor.
Of course, maybe Boozer has grown up since then, and if he joins the Heat, he will be doing so in a respectable way this time.
Anyway, back to the basketball - Boozer would probably be good for the Heat. They need more big men, and Pat Riley likes brawny tough guys like Boozer. He would fit in fine.

I thought Boozer was really slime to leave Cleveland the way he did, until I realized that Utah offered him more than $25 million more than Cavs were talking. I find it hard to believe that any 22 year old kid would have handled things any differently.

June 29, 2008  12:21 PM ET

hllywd..... great point. who amongst us would have done it differently and I've doubled up 22 years old. Carlos will and should follow the money. as established in the Jayz/bron post, that will almost certainly be in Utah.

OK, listen up Grasshopper. As a 2nd round pick, In 2002 Boozer was signed by the Cavaliers to a 3 year contract at an NBA minimum.salary of $695,000. .It should also be noted, that money was NOT GUARANTEED. After 2 years he had virtually outperformed that contract and he and the Cavs made a handshake deal for him to become a restricted free agent after the '03-'04 season. It wasn't illegal or "under the table." He was to be resigned for 6 years and $39 million. That deal however could not be signed until July 1st. In the interim, Utah made an offer through his agent of $68 million. Which was eventually accepted. Because of salary cap restrictions, the Cavs were unable to match the offer. Boozer was probably wrong, but we're talking $29 million. Any employee at IBM, or anywhere else would have done the same thing, including you. It's a bit much to expect a 22 year old kid to walk away from that type of money. I'm somewhat of a Cavs fan. As such, I can't help but think what might have been, but I ain't mad at him for taking $29 million.

I love the people that are still mad at Carlos for leaving Cleveland. They are the same people that don't understand this game is a business. It's comparable to you going from DHL to UPS for more money (minus the trading cards or endorsements...ha ha). You wouldn;t move for millions more dollars? PLEASE!!!
