Five teams interested in Kevin Jones

Kevin Jones went through a workout Saturday while four NFL teams watched the running back sprint and cut just five months after he had major knee surgery. Dr. D.S. Ping, who has been helping Jones rehabilitate his right knee, said Miami, Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Detroit sent representatives to the workout in Saline, Mich. The Lions cut their former first-round pick in March with one year left on his contract after he hurt the knee late last season, adding to the injury woes that have stunted his success in the league. The Cleveland Browns also called, Ping said, and asked for a video of the workout.

kevin jones must feel like he is in college again trying to raise his status up to get a job in the nfl.

June 29, 2008  08:39 AM ET

And why isnt Chicago on that list of teams?

June 29, 2008  08:56 AM ET

What is a Lions story doing on a Cowboys site?

June 29, 2008  09:32 AM ET

The steelers areoverloaded at rb and just cut Davenport....this makes no sense

June 29, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Why cut the dude, then show up @ his workout? THAT makes no sense...

June 29, 2008  09:49 AM ET

steelersinmd, agreed. still can't figure out why they cut davenport. and then would look to jones?

June 29, 2008  09:50 AM ET

Wow, the Steelers are such idiots.

June 29, 2008  10:07 AM ET

Matt Millen never ceases to amaze me in Detroit! Didn't he cut him in the first place?

June 29, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Guys, this is so simple. The Steelers sent a rep simply because it always pays to take a look. What if Jones shows better than what they have? Take the Steelers #3 RB as a baseline, what if he shows real good? Kevin Jones is also a different type of back, what if he fits the game plan? What happens if Kevin Jones doesn't get picked up (serious possibility, he isn't gonna start), and the Steelers loose one of thier RB's to a season long injury? Great info on a decent back. You always want to stockpile info on a back that "could" fit into your system if one of your backs goes down

June 29, 2008  10:58 AM ET

First the Lions are run by a bunch of idiots.... if they were intrested enough to show up at a workout 2 months after cutting the guy... don't effin cut him. Two, Kevin could be very good, but the injury bug has his number... hopefully he can get past it.

June 29, 2008  12:35 PM ET

Oh he is going to get another chance, can you say Comeback Player of the Year, if he a starter on someones team he will be the man, an I feel that will return to his rookie form!

June 29, 2008  12:48 PM ET

Kevin Jones isn't going to sign anywhere to be a #3 back. The Steelers have Parker and Menendhall as 1 and 2. They still have plenty of options for a 3rd back. The Steelers getting involved makes no sense.

June 29, 2008  01:04 PM ET

Jones will get picked up by someone. He isn't great by any means but he does have value. He's not a head case like Benson or Davenport, so he has value.

June 29, 2008  01:18 PM ET

This is actually one of the few smart things the lions have done. If you knew anything about the situation they cut him because of his salary raise. They refused to pay a first round pick with an increasing salary to a guy who will miss his second straight camp and very injury prone. He is a great back when he is healthy and running plays are actually being called, two things that seldom happened at the same time. The same day they cut him they also said it wouldn't be out of the question to re-sign him on a new and smaller contract.

June 29, 2008  02:37 PM ET

jones isnt high on value
but i agree with joec
steelers make no sense
nor do the packers Really
cause theve got ryan grant and brandon jackson
i think the logical choice would be cleveland

June 29, 2008  03:01 PM ET

The Saints could use this guy. Deuce is iffy at best & Reggie isn't a 3-down back.

June 29, 2008  03:09 PM ET

Perhaps Tomlin knows something from coaching against Jones with the Vikes? Also, the Steelers could be looking for a veteran presence in the backfield for camp with Fast Willie and Moore? Davenport was due $1 mil and (allegedly) hit his old lady harder than he hit any defender last year! As far as their presence at the workout not making sense, well, who wouldn't take a shot at a bargain 3rd down guy with starting experience? Russell and Davis are unproven commodities and Mendenhall won't see big minutes unless 2 guys go down in front of him. Mid-season injury replacement is Jones' best shot at this point.

June 29, 2008  03:41 PM ET

I like the comment about Detroit cutting him and then showing up at his workout. But I'm guilty of that. I broke up with a girlfriend years ago and then tried to get her back- she said I was just as bad as Matt Millen. Didn't know what she meant back then...lol

June 29, 2008  04:11 PM ET

He'll play great for 4 games and then get hurt, they better have some serious injury clause in his contract

Good one Riddy!
