Angels hitter on Dodgers' radar?
As the Dodgers try to add a power hitter without subtracting from their young core, they need not look beyond the visiting dugout today. They'll find Juan Rivera there, at the end of the Angels' bench, buried under the weight of Gary Matthews Jr.'s contract. Rivera got 400 at-bats once in his career, in 2006. He hit 23 home runs. The Dodgers haven't had a player hit more than 20 in three years, and no one is on pace to hit even 17 this year. Rivera's career slugging percentage is .464; no player on the Dodgers' active roster has a higher percentage this season. The Dodgers could play Rivera, Matt Kemp and (fingers crossed) a healthy and productive Andruw Jones in the outfield.

Rivera is not the solution to the Dodgers' problems. What idiot wrote this?
LA has Ethier and Kemp, both of whom need at bats. That leaves Andruw "****" Jones and Juan "**** too" Pierre for the other OF spot.
The Dodgers got burned on those two guys, and it's going to hurt them for years.

Rivera is better than the doyers outfield, but who would they give up?

I like having Rivera on the bench for the simple fact that should he have to come in because of injury, he brings quality. The Dodgers need more help than Juan can give them.

Andruw Jones is another great example of the Dodgers bungling into free agency and picking up a total loser who could care less about how well the Blue Crew do.

andrew was great in his day, still has some pop, but he is not the answer or the cure all, not by any means.

On the day that the Dodgers signed Andruw Jones, there were three articles on SI.COM proclaiming it to be a wise move. I wrote a comment here on one of them saying that it was ridiculous and was going to kill that team. Ha! Not only were the Dodgers mistaken, but so were a lot of sportswriters.
If the Dodgers want a hitter, the best and cheapest one around is Barry Bonds.

The best the Dodgers have ever done in going outside the organization to get a hitter is when they got Shawn Green--and they let him leave due to free agency. I can think of no one else--at least in the last 10 years--that LA has gotten by trade or free agency that has made an impact. Furcal looked like he was going to be a bright spot in the Dodgers' F.A .history, but he's hurt--again
The Boys in Blue have some very impressive up-and-coming bats in Loney, Kemp and LaRoche. In his 3rd year, Ethier has already proven himself a capable (heck, impressive) every day player. Martin will be a solid bat for years to come. McCourt, Colletti and Torre need to ignore garbage like "solutions" this article suggests and grow the players they've got.

I'll eat my words--LA has one free agent signing that is still providing dividends: Jeff Kent. But virtually all other attempts have been of the Garciaparra variety--short-term help that ties up revenue long-term. Let's hope that Jones' surgery turns out to be the key to his resurrection. That's a deal that could still turn out okay.

I agree that Rivera is most definitely not 'an' or 'the' answer to the Dodgers lack of offense. And, even suggesting he might be seems unfortunate because it points finding a permanent solution in the wrong direction. If the Ds want an inexpensive temporary solution to their current lack of offence (with the hope that the young core is maturing and will ultimately provide lots more - which is obviously where the oermanent solution has to be), what indeed is wrong with having B.Bonds. Signing him for the rest of this year at least might really jolt the offense - and I can't imagine Jones coming back and doing that - is he even going to be back this season (before September). I agree that was a questionable signing -

The Angels are always so good because they are deep enough to have guys like Rivera on the Bench.
Only thing worthwile for the Angels would be bull pen relief.

I like the core the Dodgers have, but injuries are killing them. Not sure if Riviera is the answer or even part of a solution. I honestly think they need to do something very soon though.....

If the Angels are too stupid to play Rivera over an over-the-hill Garret Anderson, I'd love to see this guy go elsewhere. He's a very good player, with a great attitude. He is being totally wasted by the Angels.
