Rays to be active in trade talks

If you believe everything being said, written and blogged, the Rays are deeply immersed in talks for Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia, are seriously interested in Rockies closer Brian Fuentes and are stalking right-handed hitting outfielders Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, Xavier Nady and a half-dozen others. It's trading season, with the nonwaiver deadline barely a month away, and the one thing that is certain is that the Rays are going to get a lot of play. (Another: They're not going to say much about it.) Being in contention for the first time, with money to spend to add payroll and a treasure trove of prospects from the game's deepest farm system to offer (at a time when other teams are increasingly reluctant to part with young players), the Rays are going to look into all possibilities. And why not?

Why disrupt team chemistry??

Matt Hollida would be a good fit. I good hitter entering his prim to help this offense

June 29, 2008  10:15 AM ET

If they got Holliday he would have to DH or move to RF or Crawford would have to move to RF/DH

June 29, 2008  10:28 AM ET

their pitching has finally caught up with their hitting. And getting Garza for Young was a great trade.

I like the Rays I hope they win it this year!

I stress the word hope

Look, you guys got here by first round draft choices and the youth movement. Don't make the big trade like the red sox and the yankees, (high priced and raising payroll, look at Detroit!) It would be a jinx for you now! Stay with your original business plan! Keep fighting, You're gaining the respect you deserve now.
PS: Save your money, let bean town and the big apple spend their cash, spread that around and help the economy.

Any one of these guys would be a big hit in Tampa, and probably wouldn't disrupt team chemistry. Can you imagine the offense with Holliday dropped in the 3 or 4 hole? Oh my gosh. The bullpen has been good all year, but what if Fuentes was there to help Percival? Wow. And the rotation with Sabathia would be baseball's best.

I don't really see Holliday moving to Tampa, but the two pitchers are definite possibilities.

everybody's talking about the Rays like they're the real deal ... maybe ... but let's see where they are in late August before jumping on the 'Cinderella' bandwagon

June 29, 2008  11:55 AM ET

They have decent pitching. Even the guys that don't have the best stuff and are developing are inning eaters. With the bats and speed on the bases it's hard to keep this team at bay run-wise. Everyone wants them to go away and they aren't yet.

June 29, 2008  11:55 AM ET

They should make moves I mean there a few players away from world sereis contention and with all the prospects they got why not go after them and become a world series contender

Let's see if the Rays can keep it up. Remember what happened to the Orioles in 2005 .

June 29, 2008  02:42 PM ET

The Rays are for real, and they'll be around for the next 5 years or more.

June 29, 2008  06:02 PM ET

There is a good article in SI this week about the possible trade for Sabathia. Supposedly they could trade a number of their prospects in their system without really putting too much of a dent in it. Then when he walks in the offseason for the big deal the Rays would get two compensatory picks in next year's draft. It would be a smart move for a team chasing a resilient Red Sox team in the AL.

That's 49 wins in the first half of the season, and the best record in baseball... bring on the Red Sox!

June 29, 2008  06:04 PM ET

I think the Rays only held onto EJ because he was out of options. If we could package him and a prospect for a better starter (CC is too expensive, I think), and package Justin Ruggiano and prospects for Jason Bay, and somehow snare one more killer setup/closer to mitigate potential health problems to Percy and Reyes, we'd be in great shape for a poennant run. The bats are finally waking up a bit, and when Aki comes back, he's going to be itching to go... Chemistry is great right now, but additions may not in fact compromise that. I just wish Upton would get his head out of his arse and back in the game; WAY too many mental lapses in the field and at the plate lately.

Yeah but this is an experienced Red Sox team that has somehow won even with injuries to Dice K and Ortiz. They have more postseason experience so a gamer like CC could separate the Rays in the postseason. Not saying they absoulutely need him but it could help.

I'm just glad that the Rays are generating this much conversation. It's been a really, really fun season so far for us long-suffering Rays fans. GO RAYS!!!
