Sundin not sold on Habs, Wings

Depending on which of his friends you believe, Mats Sundin is not really enamored with the supposed frontrunners, Montreal and Detroit, would consider the New York Rangers or Florida Panthers, but is also having trouble coming to grips with a final divorce from the Leafs. Fletcher does not want to talk about Sundin's successor as captain until it's clear he's not returning to Toronto, but it's going to be a favourite guessing game of Maple Leafs' fans between July and opening night in October. The Leafs will consider starting 2008-09 without anyone wearing the C, especially with two alternates, Bryan McCabe and Darcy Tucker, no longer in the team's plans.

Sundin going to the Panthers is a joke. No way does he go to those losers even for the money, unless his future bride wants to live in the sun.

The big question is...Will he play next season?
I say yes and he can quit acting coy about it. There is a ton of money out there this year and he happens to be the only number one center available. So I guess he will go where ever he feels like. I don't think it will be Toronto and I just can't wait for this saga to finally end.
Something tells me New York...No real explanation, but I just have this feeling. I guess we'll see.
I think the Leafs will take a serious run at Brian Campbell too.
I would guess Hossa might end up in Boston but they may not have the coin to offer what others have...such as Chicago or even the Habs or Leafs. The latter all look to be wanting to be aggressive while others' NYI, Preds, have to be to reach the minimum.
I think Malone is going to get more than he is worth from someone...and I don't think it's going to be Tampa...These guys are all in the driver seat and there will be plenty of offers no matter who is holding their rights at the moment.

Baunded, I bet he plays next season. I just hope to the Hockey Gods it's not with NY.

June 29, 2008  12:37 PM ET

I'm a Wings fan. My friend Edmundo is a Habs fan and he says that Sundin will be with Montreal this coming year. He has never been wrong, going 0 for 0, so I got to believe him. ;-)

June 29, 2008  12:41 PM ET

I think Sundin will end up in New York. I honestly never thought he'd sign with Montreal simply because of the fan reaction. His leaving would be widely accepted if he chose a team not in the Leafs division. Montreal, Ottawa, Boston or Buffalo would give him enemy #1 status. If he joins the Rangers, he only plays the Leafs a few times and can rest easy the rest of the year. I can't see why he wouldn't choose Detroit, maybe they aren't offering him the 7 million per, but Ilitch has never been afraid of tossing money around...

I am like Baund-ed and every other Leafs fan though, for the love of our Holy God, just end this saga now... it has been painful.

Montreal looks to me as a higher possibility than NYR. But now the cap's up 6 mil, who knows what can happen....

June 29, 2008  12:43 PM ET

Sundin to the Panthers, .... Guys! He left Toronto because he want a cup before he dies... Do you really think Florida could give him that. I mean apart from NHL 08 on PS3?

June 29, 2008  02:28 PM ET

Well you can pretty much count out Detroit, I dont' see him coming here to have less ice time or to play on a 3rd or 4th line.

June 29, 2008  02:33 PM ET

gainey will not beg this old man, sundin to join a team that gainey worked so hard to rebuild. talk to hosaa. wait a year and offer vinny the big coin.just dont make another mistake and put this team back wards. got to put a few pieces in place to put the canaidians over.

June 29, 2008  02:51 PM ET

Boston, is it a done deal with Malone and Roberts? I read it's "close" but not confirmed yet?

June 29, 2008  03:04 PM ET

It makes no sense for him to sign in NY. Neither Drury or Gomez will be as effective going to a wing. Dubinsky?

June 29, 2008  04:25 PM ET

THANK YOU BOSTOMGM.

WAH!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111

June 29, 2008  04:52 PM ET

Just hope he does not land in Detroit I dont see it being a good fit

June 29, 2008  05:04 PM ET

He's coming. He's going. He's staying. He's leaving. He likes the Habs. He doesn't like the Habs. Maybe it's Detroit. Maybe it's not!

Is Matts Sundin going through meno*pause?

June 29, 2008  05:46 PM ET

Sick of you, we are all getting, Mats. Wearing thin, your little games are. Losing even more respect, you are.

June 29, 2008  07:10 PM ET

Detroit is probably gonna stick with the exact same line-up next year, so I doubt Sundin goes there. He probably won't go to Montreal because of the rivalry with Toronto. I don't see him signing with the Panthers, throwing away his chances of a cup. I also don't think he goes to the Rangers. I think he stays in Toronto.

June 29, 2008  07:13 PM ET

Sundin going to NYR reminded me of the time when Guy LaFleur signed with the Rangers when he was wearing that piece. Does he still wear that wig?
Bobby Hull's piece is even worse!!

June 29, 2008  07:36 PM ET

Whatever Yoda, he has earned the respect that he gets!

Air time is another subject. THe person talking about Mats Sundin the least is Mats Sundin.

(Hint, Hint)

June 29, 2008  08:17 PM ET

Mmmm...,Maybe Sundin will actually stay in T.O. It''s never been mentioned before that he's ever had an interest for Montreal, Detroit, nor any other team, let alone one of the small market teams. Sundin, probably one of the most unarguably talented Leaf's players, all ready has lot on his plate, and frankly speaking, Although, I do question Gainey's interest in Sundin, it's almost a "step" backwards, instead of forwards. He's already doing a marvelous job in rebuilding one the most storied franchises in the NHL. Sure, he'd be a great at a role as player/teacher, but for how long, But then again look at another Leaf's great, Dougie GIlmour, I think he did really well, during his tenure in Habs' ville!! Who knows, perhaps Sundin needs to relook at his future in the NHL, and not just with the Leafs.

June 29, 2008  08:45 PM ET

I agree.

But he might retire, too!

Nobody seems to think that is an option, but he has mentioned it for 3 years now.
