Gilbert Arenas said he opted out of the final year of his contract with the idea he would remain with the Washington Wizards. When NBA free agency officially opens at midnight tomorrow, Arenas will have an opportunity to show he was sincere. According to a league source familiar with the situation, Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld plans on soon offering Arenas a lucrative long-term contract, one that could cover up to six years and could be worth more than $100 million. However, whether Grunfeld and the Wizards are willing to meet the three-time all star guard's wish for a maximum-level contract -- one that would cover six years and pay him over $124 million -- remains unclear.

Isn't it great to be a pro athlete? Just playing a kids game and you can make millions of dollars to last you about 50 life times.

agent zero has as many rings and as much playoff success as his nickname suggests. he should take the 100 mil and kiss grunfeld's feet, and every wizards fan that come to watch their games.

and they are going to give him this after he said he would take less keep him to his word and give him 6 years at 80mil this will give you mor room for Jamison

June 30, 2008  05:49 AM ET

if they sign him to a max deal or close to it, they will be a lottery team in two years. they will not be able to sign any help for him. things are circling the drain.

O thought he became a limp? Can he actually play without tearing his knee ligaments anymore? C'mon, be real people. He can shoot when he is healthy and so can Iverson. He needs to go be Kobe's boy in LA and learn from a player who can still - jive.

June 30, 2008  06:23 AM ET

Yeah.....I wouldn't give this guy anywhere near a $100 M, he will have no incentive to work hard. This is what I like to cal a "Go F-yourself contract". When the coach tells him to do something, his attitude towards the coach will be, "Go F-yourself, I'm loaded I don't care what you say."

June 30, 2008  07:51 AM ET

Yeah, I would have to agree with everyone on here. If he get's the max contract the wizards will not have any money to sign anyone else. Plus you have remember that the wizards in their history have not really signed any big name free agents. The stars they have had have been traded to Washington.

June 30, 2008  07:58 AM ET

The success of the team is obviously second to Gilbert and his agent.

June 30, 2008  08:25 AM ET

That ain't even enough to feed his family.

June 30, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Didn't the team play better this year WITHOUT him?

June 30, 2008  08:40 AM ET

I hope the Wizards do it! That'll knock them out of contention for a few years til they dump his contract to the Knicks.

June 30, 2008  08:55 AM ET

They played much better w/o this limping ball hogging self-serving maverick. But guess the 100mil is to fill the stands and sell some jersies.

June 30, 2008  09:04 AM ET

Just think about this for a minute: Why is Gilbert Arenas (ZERO PLAYOFF SERIES WINS) going to be making more than Finals MVP and BETTER PLAYER, Paul Pierce?

That's the NBA and the stupidity of the Wizards, who WILL NOT WIN A THING with a shoot-first PG, who hoists ill-advised shots, makes no one better and his TEAM was better without him? Now if you're the Wizards and they were BETTER without him, why wouldn't you invest that money is getting MULTIPLE players that will make your team better? After all, is this about making an overrated player rich or doing whatever it takes to win a championship for your team?

do a sign and trade for some one else. that way he can be someone else's headache.

Greed disgusts me.

the mans going to get paid 100M to ride the pines with a sore knee. must be nice !

June 30, 2008  09:39 AM ET

Ive never understood why teams give players a 4/5 year contract with the final year player option!
why not just offer a contract with a year less, or a contract for 4/5 years!

Its just asking for teams to have to pay their player even more, or if the players terns into a dud, they wont opt out then leave this big salary on the teams books!

Is it me or is this one of the most strange things that owners do?!

June 30, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Overpayment to someone who is overrated. What a world!

June 30, 2008  09:45 AM ET

Wow thank god most of you aren't the Wizard's GM! You have to look beyond the money. 1. If Gilbert doesnt come back, chances are Jamison won't want to come back. 2. Caron Butler would start getting double teamed and unhappy. Like someone said, the Wizards dont sign many big time free agents which would make us suck again. If the Wiz are so much better without Gilbert, how come when Gilbert played in previous seasons we had better records, and actually won a playoff series? With Larry Hughes playing next to Gilbert, he scored career highs in points. When he left, he suffered. When Caron was in LA, he was not nearly this good next to Gilbert. All you fans from other cities can criticize him all you want, but if he doesnt resign with the Wizards, I can guarentee lots of players will be upset.
