What started U.S. Cellular Field fight?

Doesn't sound like the brawling in the stands at Saturday's Cubs-White Sox game had much to do with Cubs against the Sox. According to Tom Lamb, head of security at U.S. Cellular Field, the Sox don't know what precipitated the brawl, but apparently some money fell out of the purse of a woman, and another fan picked it up and refused to give it back. That led to several fans punching the alleged offender. Video of the action showed a Cubs fan joining in on the same side as some White Sox fans. The man, Brian Nolan of Woodridge, was charged with theft and taken to district headquarters at 35th and Lowe Avenue and then to the First District lockup, according to a police source. He was released Saturday night on an I-bond.

If you're not attacking first base coaches, you're stealing money and beating people.

Stay classy, Chicago.

Wow it was a tip. Some drunk gal spilled her purse and then some drunk boy wamted to keep some money for himself. Then it was on! It is a trip how people in Chicago behave and is it all about racial tensions? No not always. To quote a famous American hero: We all justa got to get along peoples.

I'm happy to hear other people were willing to help the woman get her money back from the thief. That's a good thing in my book.

June 30, 2008  06:42 AM ET

Let's be clear. This was a White Sox fan who stole the money and White Sox fans who initiated the brawl. The Cubs fan was just there to join in the fun.

So Coco Crisp was wearing a White Sox or Cubs jersey...?

June 30, 2008  07:10 AM ET

Wow...ridiculous, can't everyone just enjoy their baseball games in a civil manner

June 30, 2008  07:40 AM ET

I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner what with alcohol still being served at sporting events. Not everyone becomes a friendly drunk.

June 30, 2008  07:59 AM ET

Bond says it: They have fights in Kenya and Sweeden too. This was not racial from what I read.

June 30, 2008  08:11 AM ET

We need some European soccer hooligans to show American baseball fans how to start a riot.

June 30, 2008  08:26 AM ET

THIS IS WHY THERE SHOULD BE NO ALCOHOL AT SPORTING EVENTS. If you can't go 3 hours without getting drunk, you have serious issues.

June 30, 2008  08:29 AM ET

I agree Troy

June 30, 2008  08:36 AM ET

LOL, good for any fan to come to the rescue of a person getting their money stolen. Hope that guy took some hard shots for being a horse's rear!

June 30, 2008  09:08 AM ET

Going 3 hours without getting drunk...thats unpossible! You have to drink to like the White Sox.

June 30, 2008  09:16 AM ET

Some cat rocked a deuce in the urinal?

June 30, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Heartwarming to see that fans of the ChiSox, and the Cubbies, can put aside their differences join together to give a beating to a common thief.

I'm planning to visit Chicago soon, and I'm pleased to read that it sounds like a friendly place....

June 30, 2008  10:53 AM ET

hey thats just a couple drinks and one **** later in the equation and you got yourselves a fight. ....

the money fell out and the guy was **** enough to take it...some people werent blind to the situation and im sure alot of people saw him take the money...i think they did the right thing...maybe violence aint the best thing...but hey..i probably would have done the same thing...

Lets think stats people...40,000 peaople at the game Saturday, maybe 50% above legal drinking age for an even 20,000, of those ( a low estimate i understand) half, for 10,000 were imbibing and of those maybe a quarter were blasted, 2,500 (low again I know but bear with me) and 1 guy, or .0004 of the drunks, not that we actually know if he was drinking or not, but 1 guy steals money and a fight ensues, but people blame...alcohol? Sounds like the guy was just a jerk drunk or not. However the amazing leaps of logic to blame beer sales astounds me.

Would it have happened if beer wasn't involved, probably not. We will never know for sure, but I'll tell you that it would be a much more pleasent experience for a family if there were no alcohol served at sporting events. I wont take my kids to a ball game because 1) I can't afford it anymore and 2) because it is SUCH a bad enivronment for children,

What was the cause? In a word....DRUNKEN UNEMPLOYED CHICAGO AREA FANS
