Stoops' job riding on bowl game?

Mike Stoops' job security and a more explosive offense should be the top story lines for the Arizona football team. At least that's what the college football preseason magazines are saying. Stoops, entering his fifth year with the program, has a 17-29 overall record and has yet to reach a bowl game. A bowl doesn't seem out of the question, with most agreeing this is Stoops' most talented team, despite the inexperience on defense.

I sure wish he would go back to Norman and get that Sooners defense back to what it once was.

I think it is

Five years, thats about the right amount of time to get rid of all of the previous coaches mistakes and start building a solid progra,. I hope he gets it done this year.

June 30, 2008  09:24 AM ET

It's not like he inheritted a solid football teamwith a good football program to begin with. Arizona is a basketball school. I'd give him a couple more years to be sure.

Stoops to conquer?

June 30, 2008  11:33 AM ET

I would think so too. He has to get it done.

Stoops is a great coach, but he doesn't have much to work with.

And he's doing a great job i recruiting considering that 60% of Arizona's population are over 70 and retired

Yes, I know Stoops was in charge of arranging summer work experiences for the players, AND you are dangerously close to infringing on my turf with that name, now lock it up!!!!!!!!

copywrite infringement on fannation, would that be a civil suit?

June 30, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Fo' shizzle.

I, too, endeavor to keep it "reeuh."

Glad to see they've given him a chance for 5 years to get his kids that he recruited into the program and playing...we'll see how it goes. Best of luck to him.

TRUTH, you arent implying Les is living on bought time are you?

Some jobs just are not doable and brother Stoops clearly isn't up to this one. It will be hard for UA to move up to the first tier in the Pac-10 and will take a coach and program they probably can't get. Stoops may get another chance, but he has to do it on his resume, not Bob's.

June 30, 2008  04:25 PM ET

This doesn't surprise me. It is ALL about recruitment. You can be the coach of the decade, but unless you can get the kids to come.......forget it.

Bowl games aren't what they are cracked up to be.

Nice hit MrMiyagiJR!

Bowl games are an important step to building a program like UA:

1: $$$ for the program
2. You get a few weeks extra practice
3. Five star kids don't like to go to programs who don't play bowl games
