Mavs lining Jones up for trade?

At 11:01 p.m. Monday, the NBA's free-agent period will open, and the Mavericks will start courting players who no longer have a job. As with every free-agent season, the first order of business is their own. The Mavericks expect to hear today that Eddie Jones is going to exercise his option and be a member of the 2008-09 team. The other choices would be to become a free agent or retire. But at $1.9 million, Jones is a relatively cheap insurance policy and a good outside shooter. He could also be a chip in future trade scenarios. The Mavericks, who are not allowed to talk about any free agents, including their own, until Monday night, also are believed to have interest in retaining the services of Devean George, J.J. Barea and Antoine Wright.

Eddie Jones? I thought he retired?

June 30, 2008  09:05 AM ET

why resign Devean George? They need to overhaul the roster not sign spares.

June 30, 2008  09:09 AM ET

D george will have a hard time finding a spot on a high school team. But we are talking about Cuban here - one who covets Dampier, over Steve Nash. Nice move, how that work out Mark?

June 30, 2008  10:08 AM ET

as a nets fan nd cing wright play alot....DONT SIGN HIM!!!!!

June 30, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Jones is definately an excellent chip.
Obviously his best days are LONG behind him......
but he's a nice back-up, back-up veteran guard
which could net you a 2nd round pick or expiring contract

June 30, 2008  11:19 AM ET

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. As long as the Mavs remain committed to Erik Dampier, it doesn't matter who else they sign. Stick a fork in them, they're done.

June 30, 2008  11:57 AM ET

Thanks Avery for recommending Dampier over and over and over til they got him, much use he was

June 30, 2008  12:16 PM ET

The Mavs are done, They need to change up this team, get rid of the drug addict Josh Howard in a package deal with Jones or George.

June 30, 2008  01:47 PM ET

JHo will be hard to get rid. But JHo is going to work harder and has to prove everybody wrong again. Dampier is what they really need to get rid off. Mavs needs post-up player. Al Jefferson, Chris Kaman, Lamarcus Aldridge, and even Jermaine O'neal would be okay to replace Damp.

eddie jones?! for who? sam cassel or robert horry?!

June 30, 2008  03:28 PM ET

Mavs: Bring back DeSagana Diop. Let Devean George walk. Sign Barea and Wright and trade Eddie Jones for whatever you can get back.

I do not think the Mavs are "done" but I do agree with my good buddy Hllywd that they will never get anywhere with Erick Dampier. He's just not good enough to stop Tim Duncan and Shaquille and most of the other big men in the West.

June 30, 2008  06:40 PM ET

Keepin up with the Jones'..back to the L.A. Fakers..

June 30, 2008  10:13 PM ET

alrite for the JHO haters remember he is a good scorer and rebounder and he plays good defense, so if he cleans up his act he'll be an allstar again

July 1, 2008  12:10 AM ET

I doubt if Devean George can net Dallas anything. With all due respect to him, I don't think he can contribute. When he left the Lakers, we all saw that he can do nothing. Trade him for cash. or donuts. or Sprite.
