Sundin stalling free-agent decision

With Mats Sundin likely making all his suitors wait beyond tonight's midnight free-agent deadline, the Maple Leafs will move ahead and concentrate rebuilding efforts on trades and a lesser-known group of free agents in their late 20s. General manager Cliff Fletcher will keep the porch light on one more night for Sundin, but likes neither of the options left for him by his indecisive captain. If he waits for Sundin's inner Leaf to emerge later this week, he loses out on first- and second-tier National Hockey League free agents. If he tries to replace him, he will risk overpaying in a seller's market for a limited number of impact centres. "I haven't got the sense entirely that Mats (won't be a Leaf)," Fletcher said last night. "But you have to make other plans."

In cases like this, would it be advantageous to have the NHL draft BEFORE the free agency deadline or keep it the way it is?

In cases of players holding up the free agency deadline....would it be advantageous to the teams if they held the NHL draft BEFORE the free agency deadline? Or leave it the way it is? Just curious.....

Damn....I meant AFTER the free agency deadline....

Sundin sure would look good with the winged wheel on his chest. The Red Wings have the cap room. Load up!

Sorry about all of the postings, guys. The site wasn't saving my comments. I actually typed those about 10 minutes apart after going to other blogs.

No matter where he signs, it looks like the Leafs will get nothing for him. Hey, I hear Darcy Tucker is a free agent..........

WHAP-WHAP-WHAP...
So Hossa has said one of the reason's he is reluctant to return to the Pens is because he is not fond of the Coach, TheRien.
-----------------
If Malone is getting 7-8 million, what does that tell you about the rest of the F/A group?
Sheer idiocy it is...too much money for too little talents...The Islanders can sign them all with their bankroll.
I wonder how many teams will be sold after this season that have to dig in and up the minimum to 40 million while still losing money at the gate?
Good job there Bettman...put teams in small markets then up the anti so they will lose even more money and won't be able to compete. Based on the Canadian dollar and the success of Canadian teams...perhaps it's time you brought a few more team back North of the border!

Say what you want but I'm thinking Detroit doesn't need him. Big salary that can better be used elsewhere

Here we go for July 1...post up anytime. Figured we could get one thread going on the free agents and trades,....keeps us from having to post in 10-20 different threads.

Is where a 36 year olde Center going really that much of an issue?

June 30, 2008  09:43 AM ET

Baun-ded....I don't recall reading or hearing that Hossa said that about the coach.

Sundin may be 36 but he is a first line point per game player and has proven to be a ppg player regardless of who he plays with - Mogilny, Ponikarovsky, Roberts, Stajan. In Detroit he could play on the second line. He won't raise the game of anyone else, he won't recede if he plays with dead wood either. 1 point per game.

June 30, 2008  10:18 AM ET

Sundin is also the most over rated leader in sports. Dude has won nothing. Has never carried the Leafs, and has even disappeared into a slump when needed. But he is classy. And when you are available to the media, never argue with them and have a good relationship with them in T.O. you get star treatment. And he has.

I just wish they treated Sundin, McCabe, Tucker, Kubina during the season the way they are treating McCabe now. Take a hard line, agree to a trade or sit. Now the risk is nothing in return for the teams best player, captain, probable hall of famer (ppg in Toronto for more than a decade gets you HOF). Sucks.

Forgive me, but your two recent posts seem almost contradictory...

What is this Sundin to Detroit trend. I am not sure they need him. They'd have to reorganize their whole lineup sine Sundin won't settle for a 3rd line role. He wants first line and no coach on Earth would break the Zetterberg -Datsyuk duet!

Splorch ...... Sundin won the OLYMPICS last time!! but it dont counts???

June 30, 2008  11:31 AM ET

Spiny....I've heard that. Ask Baun-ded. He's the one doing it all the time. (And at my expense, too!)

Is that what's meant by "interactive" programmmes and web sites?

HOW MUCH DOES BETTMAN S***?

Zzzz....another day, another recycled Sundin article. Mats is slowly drawing this thing into Peter Forsberg territory with his 'will I, won't I' antics. That's not to say he doesn't have the right to take his time and make the best decision for himself but do we really need to be told that he still hasn't made up his mind? Of course now that I said that he'll sign somewhere tomorrow morning just to make me look bad...
