Blackhawks eye Campbell
Posted: Monday June 30, 2008 06:56AM ET
Blackhawks general manager Dale Tallon isn't mentioning names of players he'd like to acquire when the NHL's free-agent signing period begins Tuesday, but one is obvious. The Hawks sorely need a puck-moving defenseman, and Brian Campbell is available. The 2008-09 salary cap was announced last week at $56.7 million, and Tallon says the Hawks have about $44 million committed. That leaves plenty of money to sign Campbell, who finished last season with the San Jose Sharks. Cap regulations dictate that the most any player can earn next season is $11.34 million. Campbell, who made $1.75 million last season, is expected to sign for about $8 million annually.

Tampa will offer him 11.34.

Report Offensive CommentWell Dale, the lineup forms here, especially when everyone wants a puck-moving defenceman.
PopKing | 06/30/08, 07:21 AM
Report Offensive CommentExactly PopKing...This guy is going to be like taking the number one draft pick...everybody is going to make a move and the net result is Brian is going to become a very rich and over-paid defenseman that upsets the balance of salary in the league. Next year is going to be brutal with free agency.
Baun-ded | 06/30/08, 07:46 AM
Report Offensive CommentYep this guy is gonna jack the market. He is however the best D man out there, but other salaries are going to be based off what he gets.
Here we go for July 1...post up anytime. Figured we could get one thread going on the free agents and trades,....keeps us from having to post in 10-20 different threads.

Report Offensive CommentThey can "eye" him all they want. Campbell wont play in Chicago. Lets talk about the real truth and rumor thats going on now that SI hasnt covered. Why are all the free agents from the Pens leaving town? Why would Malone who is loved by that city, grew up there and practically part of the family that is the Pens organization turn down a substansial offer? Why would he go from being a huge part of a young team that went to the cup to a team that plays in a city where noone cares about hockey and finished dead last? Why is Roberts joining him? Why is Hossa leaving the Pens to play in Boston? Is Crosby really that bad of a teammate?

Report Offensive Commentdavep, by chance, do you know what the offer to Malone was, cuz i dont remember reading about it ...?
UtleyMVP08 | 06/30/08, 09:58 AM
Report Offensive CommentSpiny Norman... That could be, but I highly doubt it. Coaches get fired all the time and if he were really bad enough for all these players to leave town over, they would get rid of him in order to keep those guys. I hate the Pens, but even I can admit that they WERE in a really good place to win at least one cup over the next few years. That of course isnt going to happen now.
davep | 06/30/08, 09:59 AM
Report Offensive CommentIm sorry Utley, he didnt turn down a substansial offer, that was Hossa at $7mil a year. Pens offered Malone something pretty low apparently and he in return publicly said that he wouldnt sign with any team the Pens traded his rights to. Classy move Ryan...

Then if what you're hinting at is true, wouldn't Pittsburgh mgmt be smarter to trade one guy rather than let almost the entire core of the team go, especially when the sky (or at least,..the cap...curse you BETTMAN) is the limit on wheat they can get for what is essentially the face of the league? Let's face it, the one place this guy CAN match Grtzky is in marketing. Imagine what they could get for him? They could stock their farm for the next decade...

Report Offensive CommentTSN reports that Malone got a 7 year deal worth 31.5 million. Expected to earn between 7 to 8 million in each of his first 2 years, which means he'll be making around 3.3 a year the following 5 years
mmorty03 | 06/30/08, 11:04 AM
Report Offensive CommentI think he would fit well in Chicago. They are a good young team and he will add a bit of depth.
The Duke of Awesome | 06/30/08, 11:32 AM
Report Offensive Commentdavep - Could it also have something to do with their recent cup run and the success most of those player had during it? Malone, Orpik, and Hossa all had good playoff runs that raised their value above what it had been and now they are trying to cash in on it. Keep in mind that those are only 3 of their 12, I think, UFA's. We haven't heard anything about Ruutu, Hall, Dupuis, or Laraque, etc. saying they want out of town, it's only the big name guys who have a big paycheck waiting in free agency.
MaplePenguin | 06/30/08, 11:58 AM
Report Offensive CommentRuutu, Hall, Dupruis and/or Laraque arent quite high calibur players so they certainly dont get the same coverage. Plus, who really cares where any of them go? Are you a Pens and Leafs fan?
davep | 06/30/08, 12:05 PM
Report Offensive CommentYup....lost among the shuffle is Dupuis. He played very well with Crosby. A 2 way winger that can pot some goals. He's fast to boot.
As for Campbell........he did say he likes the eastern conference. So i think the eastern clubs have a head start on the teams from the west. Ottawa perhaps? They're not re-signing Redden. Hopefully Boston if we fail to land Hossa. we could cover our needs in one signing. Offense and defense.
bostongm | 06/30/08, 12:09 PM
