Manuel: New York is Yankees town

Jerry Manuel knows who signs his paychecks. But the interim manager admitted Sunday that the Mets do play second fiddle in New York. And, as a veteran of the White Sox-Cubs rivalry in Chicago, Manuel insisted there's nothing wrong with that observation. "We're kind of like the second team, just kind of like we were with the White Sox. So it's a good stage for us - a very good stage for us," Manuel said before the Mets beat the Yankees, 3-1, at Shea to win the season series between the Subway Series combatants. "The Yankees have won 26 championships. ... That's just the way it is. That's just my opinion now. I don't speak for everybody else. That's my opinion."

No s--- Sherlock! That's like comparing the Clippers to the Lakers, of course the Mets are 2nd fiddle in NY.

Another amazing comment from an import. Never ceases to amaze me and this wannabe just got his job because he was the least obstruction to the team's focus or what they interpret as the team's chance of winning on a consistent basis. Manuel is really a fungo hitting fielder's warm-up coach and that is about all. Really.

second fiddle until they win 27.

June 30, 2008  07:12 AM ET

Wow, what a revelation!

June 30, 2008  07:46 AM ET

It won't matter how many championships the Mets get over the Yankees, they will still be perceived as second fiddle because the Yanks existed first. That's just the way it is whether you're talking sports teams of family dynamics. The second born will always be the second born. Can you say Marcia, Marcia, Marcia? Same thing.

Probably the White Sox no matter what they have done or will do to the Cubs.

Jerry's next stunning revelations:
-Water is wet.
-The Pope is Catholic.
-The earth is round, not flat.

And in breaking news.. Grass is green and the sky is blue,,,

Anything else obvious you'd like to talk about Jerry?

June 30, 2008  09:39 AM ET

What's up with Manuel?

First the fans were fertilizer, now the Mets are Number Two...

Get your mind off your bodily functions Jerry and start winning some games! Did you give Willie two in the hat to run a ball club or did you do it to talk about K**K** and P**P** in the national press?

June 30, 2008  09:55 AM ET

You don't come across this kind of visionary everyday.

June 30, 2008  10:42 AM ET

This is ground-breaking commentary, Jerry...........

June 30, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Back in the 80's not so much a yankees town. Just start winning and you will see the change in the tide.

June 30, 2008  11:53 AM ET

pretty clever of Manuel -- the mediocre Mets are whipping up on the even more mediocre Yankees and their clueless new manager and yet Manuel manages to paint his Mets as 'underdogs' -- since the NYTimes owns a piece of the BoSox, the real 'team' in the BigApple is the one with Beckett and Manny

No doubt, he's like the 21st Century version of Sun Tzu

Hey Jerry winning a WS would have been a good step in changing the direction of that? That guy lost with more talent

June 30, 2008  12:17 PM ET

couldn't have said it better myself....I don't have a problem with that. I don't have a problem saying that in Chicago, the Cubs - even though they've never won....LOVEABLE LOSERS!

June 30, 2008  01:18 PM ET

WAAAAAHHHH!!! Want some cheese with your whine there, Jerry?

June 30, 2008  02:16 PM ET

You are right jerry, but the amazin's have a very nice following. remember all those old dodger/giants fans, alot of them and their offsprings have signed on with the mets, and not the hated yankees. When the dogers and giants left town, there was no way thos NL'ers were going with the AL yankees.
