Clippers prepare for opt outs

If Corey Maggette and Elton Brand opt out, the Clippers' first priority is to re-sign both players. If they sign elsewhere, the Clippers become players in a free-agent market with few teams having abundant salary-cap space. In that case, the Clippers probably would go after the Wizards' Antawn Jamison, and lesser-regarded players such as Chicago guard Chris Duhon. They also could negotiate a trade for the Bulls' Kirk Hinrich, who may be forced out of Chicago's backcourt with the drafting of Derrick Rose.

what do the Heat need to do to get Brand there?
free agent would be better then trade but i dont think we have that kind of money?
pg chalmers
sg wade
sf beasley
pf marion
c brand

nice team

June 30, 2008  08:09 AM ET

yes PLEASE TAKE HINRICH OFF OUR HANDS!

June 30, 2008  08:17 AM ET

sorry tim that wont happen mate. u wont be able to sign him as a free agent dont have the cash unless they use the mid level exeption which brand wouldnt take... plus i dont even no if the heat have theres. the only way is a trade.
and the clips would want beasley. the only chance would be a trade with marion future picks and young players... but the clips still would be crazy to take that. sorry mate

Brand should be targeted by almost every team in the NBA. He'll be a force.

June 30, 2008  08:46 AM ET

tuppytim
Cant see Brand playing Centre he is 6'8''. would be a very small team!

June 30, 2008  09:04 AM ET

The heat dont look that big now with out Brand Zo is 6'10" Blount not much bigger. Brand is a much better player then Zo now (what a player in his time) and blount is a no brainer what other options do we have out there?

June 30, 2008  09:12 AM ET

How about the hawks finally making a move and go after Brand? maybe for Bibby's expiring contract, and get a serveaceable PG till they can find someone really good. maybe a Josh Smith trade can get them a very good PG. With Joe, Brand, Al - that should be a great team for many years.

June 30, 2008  09:14 AM ET

getting brand as a free agent is not an option! your well over th esalary cap!
Stop dreaming!
Could brand defend Dwight Howard. No too small
Could brand defend Shaq. No too small.
Could brand defend Yao. no too small.
etc etc

Brand is a power forward, the same position that the heat are trying to work out if marion or beesley will play!

June 30, 2008  09:21 AM ET

Also
do we realy anticipate Brand giving up $16.4 mill? No! No other team has that kind of cap room and he is coming off an injured season, so he has to prove he can still ball!
He will still be in LA next year!

June 30, 2008  09:22 AM ET

Captian Kirk as a Clipper. ohh there is a god if he makes that happen. I will laugh at the three Clipper highlights that are shown a year on the four letter network. he plays defense like he is watching a race. Vroom....his head turns as they go by him.

June 30, 2008  09:51 AM ET

you are the clippers-
can't win with garbage players or good players........

June 30, 2008  10:12 AM ET

yeah tuppy, nice team

a 6-8 center that cant jump and a point guard that cant handle the ball...nice team

June 30, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Right when the Clippers appear to turn the corner....they suck again. That's depressing

June 30, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Quite ironic really that some of the teams that are looking at acuiring Magette and Brand are teams that past them up in the past.

Lots of rumours that Orlando will look to sign Magette
Now Chicago are looking at possibilities with Brand!

Should have kept them in the first place!

Rebuild and let Brand and Maggette walk

June 30, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Bulls should have never traded Brand for Chandler. I couldn't believe it when they did....wish we still had him.

The Clippers have been rebuilding for 20 years. If they can keep Brand and Maggette, they should. At least now the have the makings of a basketball team if they get Livingston back

June 30, 2008  11:19 AM ET

The clippers had a good draft...Eric Gordon was way underrated in my opinion! Jordan was a steal in the second because he has a lot of potential. If Livingston returns well then things look positive for the clippers.

It's time to stop rebuilding. They should hold onto Brand and Magette and try to get another big name through free agency. If money is too tight maybe it's time to sell the assets and close the franchise down for good.

June 30, 2008  11:41 AM ET

There's no way that the Clippers will hold onto both Brand and Maggette. If Brand hadn't been a restricted free agent last time his contract expired he would not have stayed. You could probably count on one hand the number of times the Clippers' front office has spent BIG money. That's why they've never been a successful team. Brand and Maggette will be better off someplace else, unless they don't mind remaining at the bottom of the standings.
