Why Minnesota traded Rolston

Knowing they had no shot to sign Brian Rolston before he becomes a free agent on Tuesday, the Minnesota Wild traded him late Sunday to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Rolston and the Wild had been talking about a deal since the season ended in late April with a first-round playoff loss to Colorado. But the Wild had made three offers without a counteroffer from Rolston's agent, Steve Bartlett, and talks unofficially died last week. On Sunday, it became official.

Nevermind Rolston, what the heck is Tampa Bay doing giving Malone 7 and 8 milliom in the next two years. The only explanation I can think of is that they would rather pay him a larger sum in the first two years instead of 5million a year in the next seven years so that they can prepare to sign some of their young guns in the future...but even 5 million a year is way too much for this guy and I am a fan of his..... Maybe Tampa will give Rolston 10 million a year.

Eat your heart out Jagr!

Looks like the New Ownership in Tampa is going to try to sign every free agent out there...How much longer before they move Jay Feaster?
I might be a little leary of these guys if I was a player...

T Bay must have a lot of room under the cap as the are about to sign Vinny to a big contract on the 1st also? I think they need some D Man and a decent goalie? Finishing last tells you something about your club? the D sucks.

Bad trade for Minnesota! Excellent acquisition for Tampa! The Lightning are serving notice that they want to climb back, not only into the playoffs, but to the top!

Yes, the money the gave Malone is grotesque! And the money they will give Rolston will be equally obscene! And .... they'll overpay for Roberts as well! It is sickening!

Makes you wonder, what will Campbell and Hossa get? Unreal! It's right back to the pre-lockout days ........ and the do*pey owners have no one to blame but themselves!

Just bought a Whaler's Jersey for about $10 (and a Seals jersey). There are these two places on eBay...away from the sports stuff, that sell all kinds of cool jerseys really cheap. And sewn, none of your iron on transfer stuff!
They had a Team Canada jersey with Lemieux's name. (only a large... too small for me) The red one where the leaf takes up the whole left side.
I'll look up the seller if anyone is interested. They also (boston gm) had several Bobby Orr things out there.
Email me and I'll get it to you later

I like Ryan Malone a lot but 7 MIL is overpaid. Doesn't Tampa learn form their mistakes that lead to letting Richards go and having holes in the net for years to come?
As for Rolston, they technically traded for his rights... Nothing is done yet. he might still turn greedy and go UFA especially if his agents phone is ringing a lot - as it should!

Malone for 7 Mil...that's a BIG mistake...no way is that guy worth that much

It's a funny thing, when a guy makes the jump from "important piece" to "huge piece" of the puzzle. Some guys react fine and step it up, a lot more of them don't though.

BETTMA S***S IN MANY MANY WAYS

June 30, 2008  11:26 AM ET

Tampa Bay has roughy $16 million dollars in cap space. They have about $40 million in players under contract. That doesn't count Vinny L's new contract extension, which will cut into that amount....They lost $7 million a year when they traded Brad Richards to Dallas....so that helped them alot. They need help in a lot of area.

June 30, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Tampa has no reported offer out there for Malone, Roberts, or Rolston. They have until noon tomorrow to get them signed or they'll be available to every team to make an offer.

I can't see Malone making more then $5 million....That's a $3.5 million jump from his prior contract.....for what? One good season? Rolston made roughly $2.5 million last year.....so $4 million may even be a stretch for someone his age....

Roberts may get the same he made last year....but more then likely less....He's on the last leg of his career....and doesn't play major minutes anymore....

June 30, 2008  11:52 AM ET

I agree PhillyMike30, everybody has been talking about 7MIL for Ryan but nowher eis there an official announcement.
Do they have to wait until July 1st to announce it, maybe?

June 30, 2008  11:52 AM ET

I read somewhere, can't remember exactly right now, that Rolston was set on testing the market. Anyone know if this is true? Or would this turn out to be a Malone thing where he's says he'll test the market then doesn't?

June 30, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Malones "average" salary is 4.5 million for 7 seasons. They just made the contract top heavy to sweeten the pot. I say kudos to them. He DID sign with them right? Tampa has some smarts behind their curtain.

As for Rolston..he wanted to see whats out there. Nothing wrong with that in my book. It doesnt necessarily mean the Wild wont re-sign him. He's just a curious lad. Thats all.

June 30, 2008  11:57 AM ET

As for the Orr jersey there Spiny One. I'll get it after i buy a Hossa jersey;)

bostongm

The smarts is his dad. Tampa recently hired him to be head of scouting or something like that. More than likely he played a role somewhere along the line.
