The Red Sox and Major League Baseball have dispatched security teams to St. Petersburg, Fla., for the next three days due to a recent threat made against the club's players. According to sources, the Sox recently received a mailed threat, believed to be postmarked in Memphis, Tenn., which targeted black and Latin players, citing at least two by name. The named players have been informed about the threats and will likely have security accompaniment away from Tropicana Field, including at the team's hotel in St. Petersburg. The Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday.

You just have to wonder what goes on in people's minds. Unbelievable.

June 30, 2008  06:50 AM ET

Those crazy confederates.

June 30, 2008  07:09 AM ET

Wow...this is really sad that people are so messed up in their thoughts.

June 30, 2008  07:18 AM ET

Yet, people here have expressed that racism does not exist and we're past this kind of stuff in America...

June 30, 2008  07:36 AM ET

This could also be a way to get so far inside the heads of the black and Latin players to ensure bad play by them.

June 30, 2008  07:58 AM ET

The cold hard truth is that racism is in ALL of us.

We ALL look at OTHER people and have a somewhat uncomfortable or opinionated feeling.

It is only in times of crisis do all races come together.

9/11/01 is an example. It didn't matter what race you were when that tragedy occured. We were ALL AMERICANS!!

However, after the crisis subsides, the hate and anger come out.

The only variable is the amount of intensity of your racism...

With that said, let there be as much peace as possible on earth.............

I do not recall anyone ever stating that racism does not exist on these threads. I think it was said that qualitatively and quantitativley we are light years ahead from whence we once were regarding racism in this country. Rascism as a process, belief, as a taught methodolgy and maybe as, yes, even an institution is far from being eradicated. Just go up to NY and Connecticut suipposedly "free, knowledgable and educated" states in Amercia. Nooses have been found hanging outside of black police poeple's and professor's lockers or doors. While we have come a far way regarding racism and it's reality the fact is racism is alive and sordidly festering in the minds of all too many people.

Wouldn't doubt that but it is still racism no matter what some sorry yahoo may think he or she is trying to do. My defintion of racsim is that if a person does or says something to intimidate on the fact of someone's racial makeup then no matter what the intentions, that it doesn't matter if the person really was or was not going to follow through with the spoken or written threat, it is racism.

June 30, 2008  08:11 AM ET

I'm on my way to Florida to help protect my boys!!

June 30, 2008  08:19 AM ET

I understand they can be protected while they travel or at the hotel but how on Earth can they be protected while on the field.

Whether there is still racism in America or not, this could be coming from someone who positively hates the Red Sox. If it were just racially motivated other Rays opponents would have received threats to their black and Latino players. Of course, this is just my opinion.

June 30, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Wow, nobody likes the red sox, huh?

June 30, 2008  08:34 AM ET

The fly doesn't like it either.

June 30, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Those crazy confederates. --- Whalers

Let me get this right. The north doesn't have racism, right? Buwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

June 30, 2008  08:45 AM ET

It is sad to have this going on. To really good ball clubs are sqauring off for the next threee days and this is going to overshadow all the positive stories inside these games. GO RAYS.

June 30, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Morning kids....have fun today.

June 30, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Who cares?

June 30, 2008  08:53 AM ET

I mean come on every once in awhile this crap happens in sports and its always some nut who is harmless. Everybody stop being so politically correct and sensitive and talk about baseball.

June 30, 2008  08:58 AM ET

It is about baseball and its just a stupid issue thats turning into a stupid debate.

June 30, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Wow, what is this the 50's again? Terrible!

Grow a mustache and chill!!!

June 30, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Hey Jaymand310, how is wailing against this kind of racism being PC? Numbnuts like the guys who target these players are exactly the reason there is political correctness. Just remember that PC was a reaction to what? Racism and discrimination. I'm not hounding you or getting on you, I just respectfully disagree with your stance. It seems like "PC" is such a dirty word, but I would think "RACISM" is a much dirtier one. Does Manny Ramirez and CoCo Crisp deserve to be targeted soley on the color of thier skin? I think we both agree, it's 2008 for god's sake, yes people should get over racism, but people should also get over being racists.

I'm gonna be clear here, I hate the South, always have because it's still 1967 down there in some regions and that is disappointing. People want minorities to "get over" America's racist past, yet what are we telling the idiot who started all of this?

Now back to sports: I CAN'T WAIT FOR FOOTBALL SEASON.

Sorry, I had to get that out.

Telly, I'll do whatever it takes to make them feel safe!
