Freddy Garcia, a three-time 17-game winner who could bolster the Mets or Yankees rotation in September, hopes to sign with a team before the July 31 trade deadline. Agent Peter Greenberg said Garcia, coming off shoulder surgery, could be ready to throw for scouts around July 20-24. The Yankees and especially the Mets are among the teams keeping tabs on Garcia; Mets GM Omar Minaya and Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez are both fans of Garcia. Greenberg this week watched Garcia work out in Miami, where he threw two 15-pitch "innings" at about 75 percent effort. Greenberg said Garcia told him, "I feel like I have a new shoulder.

Garcia could be a big difference in a team's pennant chances. Just about every team could use him. Cubs, Braves, Phillies, Mets, Cardinals, Brewers, Tigers, Twins, Yankees...

10 million dollar mistake right there.

June 30, 2008  09:25 AM ET

Yeah, like 8 other teams are interested in him also.

Eh. If he comes in and gives you a lot of innings, might help. He shouldn't be expected to seriously pick up a rotation though.

June 30, 2008  09:43 AM ET

It's great when both the Yanks & BoSox lose on the same day. HA!

June 30, 2008  09:43 AM ET

The Phillies had him & he was an absolute waste!

June 30, 2008  09:44 AM ET

He's always been a decent/above average pitcher.
IF HEALTHY- will give you innings

I would NOT trade the farm for him though

June 30, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Garcia could help a team, but I don't think he'll be a huge difference maker

as long as he can get some solid innings of work in when he pitches im fine for the mets to sign him

The Mets don't need him unless they plan to trade Perez which is possible. Garcia won't come to NY to be a middle reliever

Yes he will

When the White Sox traded Garcia to the Phillies, they knew exactly what they were doing. Not only did they get rid of a pitcher with serious arm problems, they acquired Gavin Floyd, a pitcher the Philies would love to have back given how mediocre their rotation has been lately. Garcia's arm injuries can't be taken for granted. If Garcia gets picked up it's unlikely he'll contribute much.

I wonder if Omar would be interested in him if his name were Freddy Jones?

the Yankees' track record for evaluating recycled recovered-from-injury pitchers is not the greatest -- they passed on Santana, who was/is healthy and a proven performer with at least 4-5 good years ahead of him, and now they take chances on Ponson, Garcia, Sabathia, and ??? Cashman and his talent evaluators are not to be trusted -- after all, they still think Hughes and Kennedy are the real deal -- and Kei Igawa too? of course Girardi's use of Molina, Betemit, Christian, Cano, Cabrera all at the same time would make any pitcher look bad.

June 30, 2008  11:54 AM ET

I wouldn't bother wasting any money on this guy. He hasn't been the saem since his Mariners days.

June 30, 2008  11:55 AM ET

come up with new material. The talk radio conspiracy theory is a joke.
Field Marshall Sunny Day | 06/30/08, 11:45 AM

It's not a conspiracy if they really are out to get you. The Mets are a Latin player retirement system; we could've signed Castillo for $200 and a new hat, instead he gets 4 years, $20. Moises Alou, he hasn't played more than 90 games since 1987, his 14th year in the league; he gets $8 mil to sit around in Havana all summer or wherever the hell he is. How many good honkies has this guy traded for a song and bowl of soup (Bannister, Bell to name two)?

I'm sorry it's so difficult to see the obvious. Name one big black or white signing or trade?

*crickets*

Delgado, Beltran, Martinez, Santana, Alou, Castilla...

I'm just sayin'...

Lets talk numbers-
santana is 7-7 this year.
the yankees would have had to given up hughes, kennedy AND cabrera
AND taken on a massive contract
-granted their young pitchers have been AWFUL....but they are YOUNG

No doubt santana is one of the best.....
but he has not been an 'ace' this year
And look what the Mets gave up for him.....

The Mets gave up comparatively squat for him. The guy's ERA is 3.01 and in 8 of his 17 starts, the Mets have scored 3 runs or less. In 3 of his 7 losses, the Mets scored one run - ONE.

He's pitching better than his win-loss record would indicate.
