Don't expect Hossa in Boston

Marian Hossa a Bruin? NHL free agency begins today, at high noon, and as every dreamer knows, anything's possible. But Hossa landing in the Hub was a stretch to begin with, and now that Tampa Bay has signed up Ryan Malone for seven years and $31.5 million, the bidding at the opening bell for Hossa, an elite scoring right winger, quickly should shoot up to $8 million a year, possibly in the range of six to eight years.

Amazing how someone who "wants" a long term contract seems to be the hot commodity come play-off time. And the team who goes to never seems to win it all.

"Don't expect Hossa in Boston"

No! Expect him where the cash is the greenest and most plentiful!

July 1, 2008  07:42 AM ET

BGM will be soooooooo disappointed....but I think Hossa may just resign with the Pens.

July 1, 2008  08:13 AM ET

The logic of Malone = 4.5 mil, so Hossa gets 8+ mil is flawed. Malone was valued for his physical style of play, which puts him in a specific and highly sought after group.

Hossa is a pure shooter, not a banger. He's very valuable, of course, but for a completely different reason than Malone. It's comparing apples to oranges.

mhwings: I would agree with you. Malone signing with Tampa frees up some money to go after him. However, if Sundin keeps dikking around with the Habs, they might go hard after Hossa also.

July 1, 2008  09:18 AM ET

PopKing....I agree....and signing Hossa would be a big PLUS for the Habs....he'd fit in well with their style...add Tanguay to that mix...could be potent

July 1, 2008  09:19 AM ET

T-fo.. Malone is going to be so overpaid in Tampa - which is a good thing, because the Pens were never going to offer Malone that much $. As a Malone fan, I am happy he is getting a S**tload of $, but he is being overpaid and that may make Hossa think that he should demand more as well.

The Bruins might just have to settle for Redden.

July 1, 2008  09:46 AM ET

BOSTON GM must be sleeping otherwise he'd be all over this ! The Bruins historically don't like to spend a great deal of money so landing a guy like hossa is pipe dream for and biston fan. It suprised the hell out of me when they spent to get the likes of Savard and Chara, they usually don't mind spending 4.5 million on a guy but a top teir 8 or so million forget it !

An owner with real deep pockets but short arms. I suppose the bottom of the salary cap makes them spend .

July 1, 2008  09:49 AM ET

man I gotta check my spelling before i sumit this stuff jeez ! gimme a break I just woke up.

July 1, 2008  10:04 AM ET

he rock,

I was thinking the same thing. Now bostongm has reconfigure all the line combos he was dreaming of!
And I think Redden is NY bound...The Rangers have been looking for another Brian Leetch since Leetch was Leetch!

Agreed that Malone got about 1 mil a year more than he should have...I guess Pens fans are a lttle spoiled talent-wise...when you have Crosby and Malone, we tend to think Hossa isn't worth 8 million a year. But to a talent-starved team I suppose he would be.

I'm getting tired of felloow Pens fans complaining that these guys should play in Pittsburgh for substantially less than they could earn on the open market - I mean c'mon...why should we EXPECT these guys to walk away from an extra 5 million or so? Please.

I'm a big Malone fan too, so I too am happy to see him get a nice payday.

July 1, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Boston = Jagr or Straka

T-fo is back

It should be interesting to see how he handles all of the added pressure without Crosby/Malkin/Hossa to fall back on

BETTMAN HAS RAISED S***ING TO A NEW LEVEL

For a player to command an $8mil salary he basically has to be THE guy on their team and not just as a support sniper. Because as soon as he isn't he will end up getting traded to free up the cap space.

July 1, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Some thoughts on Pengin salaries...Crosby should be making 11 mil or so...he could afford the discount because he's making large cash for endorsements (large for NHL at least).

I'm surprised Malkin is willing to sign for basically the same money. He barely speaks English, is obviously not as kind to the camera with his giant Frankenstein head, and will never make the side money Sid does.

With Malone gone, and potentially Orpik too it seems, the Pens would be well served to match any offer to Hossa up to and including 8 million.

They really cannot afford to lose all three. If they do, they jeopardize signing Malkin, Crosby and MAF long term, as they will see the team as diminished.

Spiny Norman

Haha, you just made my day it's only just started. But on to Hossa, his signing in Boston was a longshot but it's possible Chara, et. al. can convince him to take less but I don't see it happening. Right now I'm thinking either he goes back to the Pens or he signs in Vancouver/Chicago.

July 1, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!1111111

I am already preparing my excuses for why we cant sign Hossa....:(

July 1, 2008  10:57 AM ET

In all reality. We have spent 50 million to the cap already. We would have to get "creative" if we were to aggressively go after him. I'd "settle" on Jagr anyday. Its not over yet there people!!

Lets go GM,lets go!!!
