Celtics' free-agent focus on Posey

For the NBA champion Celtics, free agency begins today with James Posey as the primary focus. Most other personnel matters will be handled after Posey's situation is settled. One move was made last night when the franchise failed to make Tony Allen a qualifying offer, thus making the guard an unrestricted free agent, according to his agent, Mike Higgins. The arrival of draft picks J.R. Giddens and Bill Walker definitely hurt Allen's chances to return to Boston.

Miami was stupid to let him go... just like they were stupid to let Jason Kopono go. Giving up the best 3-point shooter in the game today and a great defender (who is a pretty high percentage shooter to boot), and Miami wonders why they were among the worst in the league? If he goes back to Miami, he's just as stupid as Pat Riley is for letting him go in the first place.

.... stupid work internet. My bad on the double post. After 15 minutes I thought I was safe to hit refresh.

Stay in Boston-- and Ainge -- you'd better resign House as well. Then worry about the rest of the free agent market.

July 1, 2008  08:42 AM ET

And Doc-- try and use House a little more-- making him ride the pine for most of the playoffs when he was a huge contributor pre-Cassell was shameful

July 1, 2008  08:43 AM ET

In fact, I wouldn't blame House if he signed elsewhere for that reason

July 1, 2008  09:48 AM ET

Yep, keep Posey, House and Davis with the 5 starters, and then improve the rest of the bench. Posey needs to be the priority, though.

July 1, 2008  09:50 AM ET

House and Posey aren't going anywhere; But they'll still need a backup PG for Rondo, Sam is done; I'did go after Lue or Felton

July 1, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Boston cannot let him go.

July 1, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Go X!

July 1, 2008  10:24 AM ET

Oh, Miami wasn't stupid to let him and Kapono go, it was the genius who stated "I don't want to overpay. I know the worth of players" Pat Riley who didn't trade them to get anything in return or keep them. He knew their worth while the heat fans posted resign Kapono and Posey and if we really can't use them, trade them. It's one of the first times I've heard of where a team lets the best 3 point shooter in the league and one of the best defensive stoppers with a 3 point shot walk away for nothing. We know Riley's an idiot in miami, so don't blame the fans. It's always the other poster's who say Riley is great. Well great move, Riley. Come home Posey!!!

July 1, 2008  10:37 AM ET

I can't explain how overrated Riley is. Yes he WAS a good coach, but as a GM/prz, he's been atrocious. He got lucky with wade and Shaq, but one boneheaded move after the other, they'r like dolphins now.

If i was wade, I'm waiting for my contract to be over and move VERY fast to either CHI or NY or some other place with a chance for a second ring

July 1, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Posey has probably realized that he has played for enough teams at this point. He'll be staying in Boston.

July 1, 2008  10:46 AM ET

A lot of teams will look at Posey as the missing piece. He may get some good offers elsewhere. I hope he stays in Boston, but...

July 1, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Boston should resign Posey definitely. His style of play fits Boston. He seems like a gets along with everybody well. So, stay and try to win another title. Tony Allen will get picked up by another team. Even though his restructured knee slowed him a little, he is still a great defender and tough. For a backup PG, I think the Celtics need to give that guard Gabe Pruitt a shot. See what he has to offer.

007, are you named for your IQ?

The Celtics made the right moves to win the title. They acquired guys that almost everyone else said were too old. They worked out.

As for the Patriots, they lost a game. One. They finished 18-1, not too bad. And they were in the Super Bowl. I think 30 other teams would have like to have been there.

Who's your team? And when was the last time it won a Super Bowl?

July 1, 2008  11:07 AM ET

Posey should be considered a valuable piece. There are plenty teams that would scoop him up if Boston doesn't sign him. Boston is making the right choice by making him a priority.
