Brewers leading Sabathia race?

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin laughed Monday when asked if his team really was the leader in the C.C. Sabathia Sweepstakes. "Just the same old rumors," Melvin said. ESPN's Buster Olney has ranked the Brewers first among the teams most likely to trade for Cleveland's big lefty, the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner. Olney cited other team sources and noted that the Brewers have the motivation to make such a move and the prospects to land a big fish such as Sabathia.

The Brewers are looking to sign "C.C." Sabathia? Where did they get the money? They'll have to sell off the farm teams to pay this guy! I'll believe it when I see it, but then again, the Brewers must be figuring on Sheets blowing out his arm, hamstring, ankle, blisters.......

July 1, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Right, right. Like the Brewers are going to get him over the Yankees. I think the Rays have a better shot. Low payroll, and they have a stocked farm system with prospects.

July 1, 2008  08:27 AM ET

DEVO, they aren't "looking to sign" CC, but they are looking to TRADE for CC.

They should do this. This will greatly help the Brewers pitching. I would LOVE this trade.

July 1, 2008  08:29 AM ET

The Rays have already been doing well, they don't need to trade for Sabathia.

July 1, 2008  08:47 AM ET

this move would absolutely help to solidify the brewers staff. i understand the whole trade him and get something back for him before his contract expires but i'm not sold on the idea that the indians are giving up on this guy yet.

July 1, 2008  08:49 AM ET

The Brewers have a new owner now and I know he's got some major cash. If he really has his mind set on a guy he could come up with the money to sign him/

July 1, 2008  08:50 AM ET

The Brewers are gonna lose Big Ben Sheets and he is our only ace. So I wouldnt be way surprised to see them land this guy.

The Yankees farm system is garbage compared to the Brewers'.

July 1, 2008  09:16 AM ET

If Steinbrenner and the Yankees do not make a big time move on him, they can kiss their season goodbye as they will be finishing third behind Tampa Bay and the Red Sox and out of the playoffs --- a once proud franchise goes belly up. A good thing they are moving to a new stadium becasue they are really stinking up the house that Ruth built right now.

this comment was so stupid that a sharted in my pants when I read it....so if the yanks do make a deal for sabathia I'm sure you'll be the first to post that "there goes the evil empire again...buying a championship."

the yanks have had troubles this year, but they are far from out of it. what is your exact definition of "belly up"? From your statement I would guess not winning the WS. Even if the yanks don't win it all, they'll still win around 90 games. Wouldn't call that belly up.

To be fair, that'd probably be Georgie's definition too.

July 1, 2008  09:22 AM ET

While I don't doubt that Mark Attanasio has the cash to sign Sabathia to the Brewers, I just don't see it happening.

Ride out the year, improve the pitching, and get rid of all the Brewers sub-.250 hitters we got.

Then Larry B is really George???

You're probably right, but with all the success since 1996, the yanks are due for some rebuilding. If they can still win 90+ games throughout those stages then that is not that bad.

Totally agree. I would hardly call this team "belly up." I know I'm certainly not comfortable with just a 5 game lead.

July 1, 2008  09:36 AM ET

Of course I'd like to see the Yanks win it, but I love how the Rays are playing. Here you have a young team with a low payroll that is strong in all aspects of the game. They scary thing is that they are built for the future and they have a great farm system. This team could be here for awhile. And if they add a top notch starter to that staff, look out!

July 1, 2008  09:37 AM ET

I'm sort of with you on that. While they rub me the wrong way some of the time, it's hard not to root for the Rays. If someone other than the Sox has to take the East, I'd rather it be the Rays than any other team, really.

July 1, 2008  09:41 AM ET

they remind me of the BlueJays back in the 80s. They were horrible for the first few seasons but put it together and made a nice run.

July 1, 2008  09:41 AM ET

The Brewers have the most in terms on prospects to give up. The AA team is loaded with talent that everyone is drooling over. Too bad they will never see LaPorta or Gamel in a trade. The Brewers next wave of talent is only a year or two away.

But some of the other pieces could be used as bait for CC....

July 1, 2008  09:50 AM ET

This could change the dynamics of the NL central a little bit.........

So tell me Larry B, what exactly (And any NYY fan can also chime in) what is NY going to give in return? See, a trade works where one team gives a player(s) to another team and the object is for the team that is giving up a player of CC's caliber to get something back in return that is comprable to the value. So please, someone that has intimate knowledge of exactly what is available in NY that Cleveland would jump at for a trade to happen. I've seen rumors, I heard rumors and I've seen several marginally intelligent people up here saying he is going to end up in pinstripes but they are comments like what Obama is making. They see him in pinstripes but can't seem to explain what NY is going to give in return. Comments of the finished product that is a vision but no path to make it to the actual finished product. So please, someone with at least intelligent knowledge of the NYY's, who is NY going to give up for them to have CC in pinstripes?

If the Tribe sends Sabathia to the Brewers, can they also send back Steve Woodard, Jason Bere, and Bob Wickman? Cuz they sucketh!!!
