Baron lining up Clippers move?

It's time for Baron Davis and the Warriors to call each other's bluff. Golden State's franchise point guard shocked his coaches and teammates by exercising his early-termination clause Monday night, forgoing the final year and $17.8 million left on his contract. As of 12:01 a.m. this morning, Davis was an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with whomever he wants. It's a surprising turn of events that ranks as both a power move and a huge risk for Davis, who is essentially forcing the Warriors back to the negotiating table after failing to secure a long-term extension. Golden State vice president Chris Mullin now has three options: He can let Davis walk for nothing, which isn't likely. He can re-sign Davis, which would likely lower Davis' salary for next season while upping the long-term commitment. Or Mullin can execute a sign-and-trade, which would end the Davis Era in Oakland, but bring the Warriors something in return. The Clippers would have about $10 million under the salary cap if they don't re-sign Maggette. They could offer Davis a five-year deal worth about $60 million and potentially still re-sign Brand. In fact, talk of a secret agreement between Davis and one of his hometown teams was already swirling around in NBA circles late Monday, though a league source with knowledge of the Clippers' thinking downplayed the possibility. Outside of the Clippers, only the Sixers and Grizzlies currently have real space under the salary cap, and neither are believed to be pursuing Davis.

Clippers or detroit in a sign and trade. Personally i still think The Melo move will happen for joe d but trust, he's got his eye on 'bdiddy'.

Wow, a Gordon/Davis backcourt could do a lot of things! They might have a bit of problem when facing a bigger two guard, but I think Gordon can step it up.

We'll give you Farmar, Radmanovic & Walton for BD.

I would love to see Baron playing for the Lakers- but highly doubt that trade would work. Those players will help Nelson with his offense

July 1, 2008  08:59 AM ET

GS lost this one big time. BDiddy will be a Clipper for the rest of his life. BDiddy would not have opt out if he didn't know there were offers somewhere else. $18 million is hard to find anywhere for an old guard who is injury prone.

Bad back and knee injuries are hard to heal for an old man.

July 1, 2008  09:32 AM ET

Mullin, asusual, makes dumb decisions. He's going to end up losing Baron for nothing. I'm not sure how sign and trades work. Since he is a unrestricted FA, can he not force a team to just sign him, w/o requiring a sign-and-trade thing?

July 1, 2008  09:35 AM ET

The real question here is this: How in the hell do you walk away from almost 18 MILLION DOLLARS!?!

July 1, 2008  10:00 AM ET

Baron Davis is the man. He should walk away and tell Don Nelson to go **** himself. He was underappreciated on that team and there are other teams that want him. Watch Baron Davis go jumpstart the Clippers next year.

July 1, 2008  10:54 AM ET

He still has a few years in him, but he is planning for a post NBA career...he is a movie producer of sorts and what better place to be to then L.A....smart kid..smarter move..

July 1, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Baron Davis has been a key player on how many championship teams? How many playoff series have his teams won?

July 1, 2008  11:11 AM ET

I never thought I would see the day when a player like Baron Davis turns down almost $18 million....you got to be kidding me

July 1, 2008  12:06 PM ET

Baron Davis is the real deal, as far as I can tell. I hope he gets a good deal from whoever winds up with him. He'll get his rings someday.

Keep em I rather lose Baron for nothing than take those garbage cans. How about this trade Kobe for CJ Watson and DJ Mbenga. My bad you guys had already signed that fool.

Hopefully Davis is just trying to get the Warriors back to the negotiating table. With Brand and Maggette both opting out of Clippers contracts, i doubt that Davis wants to go to the Clippers for less money. At issue seems to be Davis' injury history. He played 82 games this season. Losing Davis will cost the Warriors a lot more than money.

The worst part is that JTMeek actually thinks arejaydub was being serious. That just goes to show you how obsessed Laker fans are with the value of their roster. They would probably think Turiaf and Vujacic are a fair swap for Ron Artest. This is what happens when you are able to dump a rookie and Kwame Brown and get an All-Star in return. Everything is a bargain waiting to happen, I guess.

In all fairness, most Heat fans are the same way. If all the trades they proposed went down, the Heat would resemble Team USA!

I think it's time for Golden State to start rebuilding. At this point, you must trade Baron Davis, or just let him walk.

The Clippers should let Corey Maggette leave for a contending team. Then, there free agents are Nick Fazekas, Marcus Williams, Elton Brand, Paul Davis, Dan Dickau, Shaun Livingston, Corey Maggette, Smush Parker, and Quinton Ross. Resign Elton Brand and Quinton Ross. Then, sign Baron Davis. Then you sign James Posey if possible. You have a lineup that looks like this:

C - Chris Kaman, DeAndre Jordan
PF - Elton Brand, Tim Thomas, Josh Powell
SF - Al Thornton, James Posey
SG - Eric Gordon, Cuttino Mobley
PG - Baron Davis, Brevin Knight, Mike Taylor

July 1, 2008  01:14 PM ET

That looks like a pretty solid line-up to me!

July 1, 2008  01:16 PM ET

BD is the REAL DEAL. He is in the top 5 of pointguards in the league for sure! Its unfortunate he opted out. He is very loved in the bay area. This is where his had his most success, now he walks away.. i really hope he and GSW can patch it up. It was awesome watching BD, Monte, and Jackson together!

That would be a steal for Sacramento. HA!
