Devils talking to Campbell

Devil GM Lou Lamoriello has already made an early, sanctioned, start at trying to land a top star in today's opening of unrestricted free agency, where his team shipwrecked last year. The Post has learned that Lamoriello took advantage of permission San Jose granted last week to woo defenseman Brian Campbell, widely regarded as the top prize in today's unrestricted crop. Landing Campbell is a longshot, although not as prohibitive as the odds against signing Marian Hossa. If Lamoriello doesn't sign Salvador ("a distinct possibility," agent Carlos Sosa said last night), ex-Devil Mike Commodore is his likely target.

I figured all along this guy was going to come to the East if they couldn't resign him. Somehow I don't see him with the Devils though. I figured this might be a guy that Chicago would try to grab up, ( I know I know..they're in the West) or maybe Philly

As soon as they start to move...come on over and check out the blog. Good place to discuss all the moves without having to post up on 10-15 threads.

More like tire-kicking. I don't see ol' Lou forking out the kind of dough Campbell will want. He's never done it before and I don't think he's about to get started now. Lou is famous for showing the door to any player who asked for outrageous amounts of cash.

or maybe Philly
mhwings

I could see him being a good fit with the Flyers. That seems to be an area of need for them, no?

July 1, 2008  09:38 AM ET

I think Campbell's value is way over inflated due to the shortage of decent UFA D-men! He totally disappointed in San Jose.

I'm happy the Oilers picked up Lubomir Visnovsky in a trade with L.A. I'd rather have him than Campbell. He's very mobile. Good on the PP. He's a more talented version of Bryan Rafalski!

July 1, 2008  09:43 AM ET

No telling where this one will end up...it will be expensive though, whoever signs him.

July 1, 2008  10:15 AM ET

Visnovsky is nowhere near the player Campbell is, not even close. Campbell is a stud and whoever gets him is going to strenghten their D a lot.

July 1, 2008  10:43 AM ET

Why would Campbell want to go to the Devils? He will be the team leader in points for defensemen with 8 goals and 16 assists!

Devils hockey makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

GO WINGS!

July 1, 2008  10:47 AM ET

It almost sounds like Lou is beginning to regret not resigning Rafalski...

A poem:

When Bettman was King
And the Owners went "Ka Ching"
A very bad nickname was a very good thing.
Politically correct? Not in this time.
When Midgets and morons make namecalling sublime.

MaplePenguin

If he's not he should be.

But why is Campbell deemed the solution?

July 1, 2008  12:28 PM ET

No way he signs as a Devil plain and simple.

July 1, 2008  12:38 PM ET

lewdogg21, you absolutely know nothing about hockey! What, you became a red wings fan about 1 month ago?? Thats why the Devils were and still are one of the best teams in hockey over the past decade, much like the Red Wings. Devils Hockey is Defence First!! Its a team atmosphere that wins Cups here. We don't go after big name players because we care more about the logo on the front rather than the name on the back! And Lou is one of the smartest GMs in the NHL. Every team wants there Farm System to be like the Devils. Think before you speak jack@#$
