Red Sox looking for another starter?

You can never have enough and all indications are that the Red Sox are looking at several ways to improve their depth before July 31. A reliever is on the front-burner, especially with Hideki Okajima performing way below what he did a year ago. And even though the Red Sox are so loaded in the rotation -- so much so that Clay Buchholz is stuck at Pawtucket -- don't rule out Boston being heavily involved in potential sweepstakes regarding C.C. Sabathia, Roy Oswalt, and Rich Harden.

I don't see the Sox going for another starter. Their rotation is fine as is and they have Buchholz in AAA and Colon on the DL.

The need for a reliever far outweighs that of another starter.

is it just me or do the Yanks and Sox have the same issues on the mound? This is why I think the Rays are going to end up winning the east. Any move that they make will bolster an already strong staff. But any move that the Yanks or Sox make is to fill in a hole due to injury or underperoming youth.

What if the Sox offered Buchholz straight up for Oswalt? Would Houston take it? Or Lester and Masterson for C.C.? They have pieces that other teams would like. It's just a matter of whether they pull the trigger. I like the young guys myself, but if you can get a No. 1 starter.

Just stay away from Harden.

Where on earth would Oswalt be able to poach animals in Mass?

It's not just about being willing to give up Lester and Masterson for CC (which is an insane offer, by the way - they've been the best two pitchers for the Sox for the last month or two) it's the fact that the Sox don't really have the "need" for another #1.

Don't have a need? Well....ARENT THEY SPECIAL?

July 1, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Wow. Why don't the Bosox go after another DH as well?

Umm, well, I like to think so.

Lester is pitching well, but Masterton has slipped in last few starts. That may be a product of orhter tems having more film and scounting reports.

The sox staff is certainly interesting. Buckholz is clearly not ready. Dice K - who knows? The guy has been pretty good, but the arm trouble has to be a concern. And Beckett has pitched well, but the pen has faltered in a lot of his best games. The Sox have exhausted everything form Bartolo - I wouldn't expect anything else from that fat sow.

With the depth that the Sox have they could certainly pull off a deal. They have some good young startes and positioin players - something the Yanks don't have.

Don't give up any more young talent. Don't do it.
We'll be fine.

July 1, 2008  12:08 PM ET

The sox do not need to make any deals, and won't. They're just upping the asking price for a really fat C.C., who doesn't pitch well in big games, to mess with the yankees. They will find their bullpen help internally from Buckholtz or Colon. They wouldn't trade lester or masterson individually for CC.
Wait untill big papi comes back, they will be unstoppable.

July 1, 2008  12:15 PM ET

I hope the Sox have the courage to stand pat withthe good young arms they have and not make yet another bad trade at the deadline. CC is not signed so a trade of a good young pitcher for a 2 month rental is absurd. Lester could be a superstar, and Masterson could be a great help in relief down the stretch. When Buckholts returns they have a fine rotation of Beckett, Dice K, Lester, Buckholtz and Wakefield, so where is the need? Look how well the Gag-me trade worked out. Mid season trades heavily favor the team unloading the aging veteran.

Their rotation is fine..

July 1, 2008  12:25 PM ET

If the Astros would take Clay, Bowden, and 2 good hitting prospects other than Ellsbury and Lowri then I would consider it a good deal because he has proven over and over again to be a great pitcher. However, he has never pitched in the AL and who knows how he would adjust.

C.C is awful in the postseaon and Harden is too injury prone for a good package.

Harden for Bowden, pitching prospect, and a hitting prospect not named Lowri or Ellsbury would have to be considered

July 1, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Personally I think their rotaion is fine with Beckett, Dice K, Lester, Wake, and Masterson/Colon/guys in AAA like Clay, Hansack, Zink all good enough.

Beckett, Dice, and Leser all have ERA in the lower half of 3 I believe and Wake has ERA under 4.2.

All I ask is no Eric Gagne this year....Please, Theo?

July 1, 2008  12:33 PM ET

Before you say anything I know Gagne is not a starter.

Does there need to be an article about the Red Sox every freakin day? No.
