WVU AD, Rodriguez face off

West Virginia University president Mike Garrison acknowledged he told Rich Rodriguez he wasn't sold on the idea of buyouts in contracts, but he denied telling the former Mountaineers football coach in August that the $4 million buyout clause in Rodriguez's contract would be lowered. Rodriguez, currently Michigan's coach, and agent Mike Brown said in previous depositions for the university's lawsuit seeking a $4 million buyout from Rodriguez that Garrison, president elect when they met Aug. 24, pledged to remove or halve that provision in the new deal that Rodriguez then signed.

They should just settle this with an old fashion mexican standoff

What a joke!!

Well lets see a new contract that backs up this story....... otherwise Rodriguez, PAY UP!!

You signed a contract, & just because Mike Garrison said "he wasn't sold on the idea of buyouts in contracts" does NOT give you a free pass!

You should have been smart enough to have it in your NEW contract that Michigan would pay it for you!

He sounds like a crybaby to me.

srry double post

July 2, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Okay, how about this?

Michigan pony up 1 million, RRod you too = 2 million. WVa: You owe me a 10% consulting fee.

July 2, 2008  09:25 AM ET

I don't think it really matters about he said/she said. Doesn't it really come down to what was written in the contract? Just because Garrison said one thing doesn't make it the final outcome, kind of like RR's "I plan on being here a long, long time" speech didn't come true either...

July 2, 2008  10:24 AM ET

When did this contract dispute pop up? I can't believe we didn't hear about this earlier... seriously, this should have been all over FN months ago, yet somehow I missed it...

July 2, 2008  10:49 AM ET

Damn, I swear I am watching a re-run of Divorce Court here. Michigan knew of the 4 mil., went after RR knowing he signed a new contract with WVU so they can't play ignorant. Pay the money, get this mess (it is what it is) done, problem solved, period. The "08" season is just around the corner and RR will have enough on his plate with the transition. Yeah I read where he made the comment it won't affect his coaching etc. Maybe that is how he views it but it will be the play of the squad that will tell us all we need to know. If this season becomes a implosion, I won't give you 3 cents for his behind when the boo-birds come home to roost in the Big-House. Michigan Fans can make it very uncomfortable for the Coach if he screws uo (just ask Carr). Time to pay up and get on with making Michigan Football what it should be!

July 2, 2008  11:52 AM ET

Yeah and we're supposed to believe the word of a snake like Rodriguez who fled WVU before they even played their final game.

July 2, 2008  11:53 AM ET

He signed a contract plain and simple and therefore should pay the penalty for leaving. He knew what he was doing.

Since we don't have a professional football team in the Detroit area ;o) I've always bled maize & blue and this whole RichRod saga has been the sorriest chapter in the Wolverines storied history.... and it's only getting started.

He should be a pretty good coach for them. He just needs to own up to sticking it to WVU like he did and pay the penalty.

While I think it was slimy for RR to bail on his team before the 2007 season was even finished (and after one of the most embarrassing losses of his career thus far), I think the real issues here are much more black and white. Rich signed a contract that said if he left before XX date, he would owe WVU $4 million. Period. It doesn't matter what anyone else may or may not have told him -- he signed the contract.

Just because he doesn't want to pay it or doesn't think it's fair doesn't matter.

More than the lack or morals, more than the questionable playcalling, more than the arrogance, Michigan fans should really be worried about Rich Rodriguez's apparent lack of basic intelligence and comprehension skills.

I think as the season progresses and the Wolverines lose a few games (Utah, ND, Wisc, and Illinois are all losable games ... and that's just in the first half of the season) while the media continues to cover this soap opera lawsuit, you'll start to see more than a few Michigan fans with buyers' remorse.

Les Miles, you still interested?

Everybody knows that what a "presisdent-elect" (meaning he hasn't taken office yet) says has no bearing on anything. What about what RR said in August, that he would stay at WVa for life? This guy is a stinker and UM deserves better. It reminds me of when Indiana hired Sanson...you just knew they were heading for trouble. And remember, RR is the coach who produced attitudes like Pacman Jones and Chris Henry.

July 2, 2008  12:52 PM ET

USCfanINtexas - Well it does matter what they said. Oral contracts are completely valid but the only way to amend a written contract is in writing. Obviously he, his agent, and his lawyer dropped the ball.
I don't know if they had agreed to waive or halve the buyout but the written contract is completely valid in this and yes he should have to pay the piper so to say.

July 2, 2008  12:59 PM ET

You do realize that somehow Michigan is going to end up paying this right. I hope Wolverine fans are happy with what they got in this guy. Luckily he probably will bolt in 2 years. It will be a long 2 years though. You thought losing to AP State was bad. Just wait.

July 2, 2008  01:17 PM ET

What we have here is some college politician who is taking over as WVa President trying to suck-up to their popular (to the fans) coach saying with a wink-and-a-nod that maybe they won't need that buyout, since RR has stated he's never going anywhere and will look into it when he takes office. What was UM thinking in hiring this guy? Whatever you think about Carr, he had integrity and did win one NC. RR's spread offense may be effective after he recuits the proper athletes in the next couple of years, but don't you think that the other Big 10 coaches won't be ready for it by then? I certainly do. And here is something else. The Big 10 refs will learn to call the type of holding that thae spread's O-line does on almost every play. I saw that last year with Illinois. We had a decade of heartbreak with Cooper at OSU, I'm afraid UM has a far worse experience coming their way.

July 2, 2008  01:21 PM ET

This is getting good. Wait until he finishes his first season with a four and eight record. He will start year two on the hot seat then you will really see what type of person he is after he starts throwing his assistants under the bus rather than takes the blame himself and is out of a job after two seasons.

July 2, 2008  01:27 PM ET

Millionairs don't sign contracts they don't understand...besides, you told everybody you would be there for LIFE. You knew you were lying when you said it, so pay up - shut up - and don't ever come back. Your kind of character we don't need.

July 2, 2008  01:29 PM ET

UM has way too much invested in RR. Even if he posts a 4-8 they will back him up (like Notre Dame and their 3-9 this year). The fireworks will start if he doesn't start winning by year 2...the it will get real good!
