Source: Celtics want Maggette

On the first day of free agency in the NBA, the world champion Celtics, according to an NBA source, made contract offers to both James Posey and Corey Maggette. Since Boston, at most, has a mid-level exception available (expected to be about $5.8 million), it would seem doubtful they could land both players. Boston is also scheduled have New Orleans center Chris Andersen in for a visit today.

Ainge must be smoking something. I understand sometime vets sign at a discount with contender/favorite type teams to have a chance at a title, but those are usually guys well into their 30's and in the twilight of their careers (and have already made their $$$). Not to mention, where does he fit? Is he going to start over Pierce or Allen? Is he willing to come off the bench?

Maggette's 28 and in his prime and will be looking for a payday. Why would he take the mid-level, which is less than what he's making now? He's been rumored to have been looking for something in the low 8 figures.

My guess is, Maggette ends up going somewhere in a sign and trade.

C's has more option w/ Posey. Posey has proven himself and knows what the team needs from him. Maggete will be paid the same or higher then Posey and unproven w/ injuries. Ainge should weigh in on this.

Wow I really hope this doesn't happen. I'm a little tired of this rich get richer bs. I think Philly is a good fit plus they have cap space.

July 2, 2008  08:12 AM ET

If Posey can get re-signed for the 5.8 million he would be stupid to go elsewhere. However, unless someone else is stupid enough to pay him 7+ million which I doubt he can get, then get should leave. Posey gets paid with the mid-level exception and he stays on a contending team. I hope it happens.

The Clippers are not trading Brand for Marion. That is just plain stupid. I don't know why teams are so interested in Corey Maggette, he isn't that good. I'd sign him if he was willing to play for minimum wage.

can the Sixers afford Maggette and Josh Smith?

July 2, 2008  09:37 AM ET

I'm surprised the Celtics would want Maggette......I don't see that as a fit.

July 2, 2008  10:06 AM ET

I have no idea about the cap #'s ...........
but it seems IMPOSSIBLE that the celts could have garnett, pierce, allen
AND pay for Magette

anyway- magette and pierce play the same position.

July 2, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Maggete is too expensive for the Celtics. He's too good to accept the mid-level exception. He is seeking a long term deal. I think he is the league's next big star. He's that good. For the sake of argument. He is a SG/SF. He is a starter in this league. How would the celtics line up be shuffled to accomodate his skills? Sit Ray? Move KG to the center position and sit Perkins? His addition would bring confusion to the unit. The celtics need role players at this point. Maggette is not a role player.

Resign Posey and make another run. Maggette does fit and the Celtics don't have the bank to close the deal.

No way Maggette signs with the Celtics..........

In my opinion, the best fit for Maggette is San Antonio or New Orleans. These are two teams who showed in the playoffs how badly they are in need of a 2 guard. A player who can get to the rim and get the other teams early into foul trouble.

Maggette is a wrecking ball of a player. He's not a great shooter or scorer, but he's always among the top players in the league in getting to the line for his position. If he's interested in joining a title contender, then San Antonio or New Orleans would offer him a good fit.

Bonzi wells contract is expired, so maybe NO has the $ to sign Corey; Would be a good athletic fit with Paul and Chandler

Becarefulwith what you say. If the Spurs Pick him up that will give the former Champs a fourth powerful option to their roster.

Maggette, Parker, Ginobili, and Duncan, That is a Nightmare big Four that the West dont want to deal with

Excellent observation. I think he'd work on either team too. More chance of N. Orleans getting him than San Antonio though.

Im at the point where i trust danny ainge. I mean look at his track record. He pulled off a ridiculous trade a few years ago in passing on Brandon Roy and bringing in Telfair and Ratliff. But w/o Theo and his expiring contract, there would be no KG.And with no KG, theres no banner 17. He must be thinking of setting himself up for the future when ray allen's contract expires in two years. He would then have a massive expiring contract at about 19 million and possibly a very afforable corey maggette to offer for young and upcoming stars and or high draft picks. For Maggette, i think the best thing for him would be to sign on with a young and promising team that would put his talents on display such as New Orleans or Portland. Definatly should'nt go to SA. You can tell, their best years are behind them.

well first san has a bunch of guys opting out.horry's off the books barry finley ,and somebody else (cant remember) might not be back at all.tp is young and ginobili is nuts wit it..it would be nice to see something other than a floater/fade away/jumphook in the southwestern part of texas...

now to the maggette thing.... does anyone remember the boy being an **** about coming off the bench? he int gonna wanna come off behind noone and I think would poison the celtics locker room because of limited minutes...but then again them veterans might be the thing for him to mature..

maggette will go someplace he will definately start I think....along with where the money is..

danny ainge is no genious... mchale n him are buddies thats how they got KG..

otherwise marion might be in minnisota shaq would still be on the heat where he belongs...going down in flames!
