Matt Ryan isn't apologizing for benefiting from a system that allows top NFL draft picks to receive massive contracts. Even so, he appreciates where Roger Goodell was coming from last week when the commissioner questioned paying millions in guaranteed salary to rookies who have yet to play a down in the league. "You can also understand the other side of it, the concern of veterans who have been in the league 10, 12 years and proven themselves but not seen the money," Ryan said in a phone interview Tuesday. "I can understand both sides." contract with the Atlanta Falcons that included $34.75 million in guaranteed pay.

Yeah Matt, understand all the way to the bank.

" I'm rich, b*tch! "

July 2, 2008  07:24 AM ET

Matt Ryan is making more per year than Tom Brady..something needs to be done.

July 2, 2008  07:28 AM ET

He's way overrated as a QB. He was an average QB at best and gets that kind of money? Of course the system is broken. He'll probably be another NFL flop.

July 2, 2008  07:37 AM ET

It's so easy to "understand" when your stinking rich. You can buy all the "understanding" you can handle. But next year, you'll have to "understand" why everyone is questioning your contract for the numbers you won't put up in "08. That's where the real "understanding" begins.

The sign around his neck says, "If you make more money than me than you can talk to me. Otherwise, don't bother!"

July 2, 2008  07:53 AM ET

he better live up to the hype!

July 2, 2008  08:20 AM ET

Falcons, always making "smart" moves. No wonder they have never had back-to-back winning seasons.

He won't. Know anywhere I can place a bet on it, lol?

July 2, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Overrated and overpaid. What else is new in the league?

July 2, 2008  09:07 AM ET

The falcons had to draft him to get over their michael vic hangover, but he's not that good. just my opinion.

July 2, 2008  09:30 AM ET

After the Vick fiasco, the Falcons are desperate! Can this bean pole even play? Looks way to fragile!

July 2, 2008  09:37 AM ET

Don't hate the player, Hate the game (Fortunately I have never had a reason to say that before and hopefully I will never utter it again).
Seriously, there needs to be a cap on rookie salaries, but leave the percentage of revenues for players the same; thus the veterans (who have done something - not Kelly of the RAIDERS) can be paid.

July 2, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Matt Ryan is a prime example of 3 problems with the current issues witht the NFL and the Falcons. #1 He's way overrated and not in the class of Brady, Manning, Romo, Palmer, Brees or Rothelisberger, though he's getting that level of pay. #2 That the NFL has let this go on FOR YEARS shows it's lack of intelligence and forsight in this area. The only reason this has come to light this year is because after Dorsey, The Long's and McFadden, the rest of the class does'nt come close (including Ryan) of even being considered for that level of compensation. #3 The Falcons and their stupidity in over paying this guy shows the ineptitude and continued mediocrity that Falcons have been known for for decades. They over pay Michael Turner and Ovie Mughelli and numerous others and continue the tradition with Matt Ryan. Arthur Blank has the gaul to want Atlana's citizens to give him a new state of the art stadium. Well, how abouth this Arthur: You give us a state of the art team that can win in back to back seasons (something that Falcons have NEVER DONE) and we'll consider a new stadium.

So he was supposed to decline the offer? I'd respect that position if just one person here would tell their bosses that $200 or $300 per day is way too much money to be paid for essentially surfing the net all day.

July 2, 2008  09:56 AM ET

movingtarget,

i don't think anyone is _blaming_ ryan for the situation, just pointing out that he is an average, unproven quarterback who has benefitted from a broken system. Tagliabue knew he should have fixed this years ago, but he decided to let his successor deal with his problem. Good luck Goodell!!!

July 2, 2008  10:14 AM ET

And how can he understand both sides of it? Whatever...there isn't anything he can say. He is rich beyond comprehension and he hasn't done anything yet. Yo!

July 2, 2008  10:16 AM ET

Oh - one other conment. Cedric Benson just called and said everyone is invited to his 4th of July boat party this weekend!

This system has been messed up for a long time. I remember when turd Jeff George entered the league, he signed a contract that paid him more than Joe Montana. Joe Montana!

Spread the money around more evenly to the rookies. That's the real problem. A first-round pick gets $35 million in guaranteed money, but a second round choice gets a can of beans and a used Barbie doll. What a system.
