If Marian Gaborik is planning on holding up the Wild for the maximum 20 percent (slightly more than $11 million a year) of the team's salary cap, as allowed by NHL labor rules, he had better forget it. Gaborik, who was paid $6.5 million last season, can become an unrestricted free agent after next season. "I'd say anybody that's talking about the full 20 percent doesn't know the business," Wild general manager Doug Risebrough said Tuesday. "Because, first of all, that 20 percent probably represents more money than anybody else in the league is making.

Not even close to worth that kind of money. He is soft and very injury-prone.

Gabby, Gabby, Gabby.. your not worth 11 million a year, i watch the wild every chance i get and you are no crosby or ovechkin. But i do hope you resign for maybe 8.5 max

I agree... 8 to 8.5 at most...this guy is another Koivu..an injury looking to happen

July 2, 2008  09:23 AM ET

he won't get 11. Though if he has a whole season and really lights it up...someone will go for it...

Where is all this $$ coming from? No TV contract worth spit like the NFL.

Somebody should save the owners from themselves before the whole outhouse goes up in flames.

At least Riseborough seems to be thinking. Unlike the twit in Hongcouver who is spending shekels like a drunken sailor.

July 2, 2008  12:01 PM ET

Yes, give him $11 MIL and remove $1 MIL everytime he gets inured.
That should end up cheap!

July 2, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Gaborik wants out of Minnesota. He's forcing their hand. Either pay me the max or trade me where I wanna go....

"Where is all this $$ coming from? No TV contract worth spit like the NFL."
It's coming from the money Canadian teams are making.

"Somebody should save the owners from themselves before the whole outhouse goes up in flames."

Some small market team'll throw him the 11M...only to then be relocated to a new city the year after. It'll be HI-larious.

The revenue from Canuckistan can't be keeping the rest of the league afloat if this is the way they are spending. There just isn't enough in the CBC/TSN/SportsNet contracts to do so. Can't be.

July 2, 2008  02:22 PM ET

Can't blame him for not wanting to be a North Star, I mean Tame, antmore.

July 2, 2008  02:58 PM ET

This is funny, no one cares about Minnesota. No wonder their teams always leave.

Minnesota is the state of hockey...minnesota high school hockey rivals alabama football for the to h.s sport states in the country. why can't the pros be the same way...they could use a real star (should've chased malkin) and a winning team

July 2, 2008  11:16 PM ET

The Minnesota Wild has sold out every home game they've ever had.

I would argue that they have a real star in Gaborik. But their system sheilds him from real glory. To me he is easily in the top 10 players in the league when healthy. Which he isn't nearly enough.

July 3, 2008  04:20 PM ET

Gaborik, You have never played a full season and yes I do know what it takes to play 82 + per year. You tried holding the team hostage once before, and you are the highest paid player on the team. Now either PUT UP or SHUT UP.
Stop being a snot nosed little puke, we can't build around that.

July 3, 2008  04:23 PM ET

Okay Gaborik, You are the highest paid on the team and you have yet to playe 82+, and yes I know what it takes to do that. Your little snot nosed "it's all about me" attitude worked once. Please do us a favor and finally PUT UP or SHUT UP. It's little men like you who give everyone else a bad reputation. This team cannot be built around you and your holier than thou attitude so either shows us that you're really worth it or just shut up and go.

Gaborik is brittle, and he did a major disappearing act during the playoffs that only A-Rod could appreciate. That said, he is the only star on this team, and with his buddy Demitra gone, the Wild lost out on Hossa and lost Rolston....As good a player as Gaborik is, he just is not worth that kind of dough...look for Gaborik to be wearing a different Jersey in 2009-10.
