Source: Mavericks sign Green
On the first day of free agency, the Mavericks reached agreement with a player they hope will be the next Brandon Bass. According to an NBA source, the Mavericks struck a deal with Gerald Green, a slender, 6-8 guard who has been in the league three seasons. It is believed to be a one-year contract.

Why do they list him at 6-8 he's not even close to 6-8. If he was 6-8 he would actually be playing.

Bad choice. They have too many guys w/ his position already unless they are getting rid of all the other guys. They are missing a post up player and they can't understand that.

I'm not sure exactly what they are thinking but when you start seeing things like this you have to wonder if there is a trade in mind that will leave the Mavs possibly needing Green either to play or part of the trade. If Cuban sits with what he has I will be VERY surprised. Being a Mavs fan I'm still not blind and I hope Cuban isn't either (though he showed he definitely doesn't have 20/20 vision with the Kidd trade). Anyway, I feel a trade in the air and there is a long time before the season starts.

Let me clarify. I'm not blind in that I see that the Mavs will not be fighting for a championship with their current roster. The West is just too tough. If they were in the East they would be much better off but even the East is getting stronger teams and will have the Celtics to deal with.

This is a good trade! He is younger than any on the Mavs at the position...he has not even scratched his potential yet. He has a lot of potential, so why not give him a shot. Elite athlete with a good shot.

I agree the mavs are no contender, but who exactly do they have playing the 2, that is so good? A big 2 guard is a NEED and even though he may not be the answer, it is not like they can afford anybody worth a crap.

he played last year for Minnesotta, he was new to the team after the huge KG trade with Boston. He did not see many minutes as much of the team was young and lacked guidance. He did receive decent minutes with the Celtics and showed flashes. He is a more of a tall 2 guard than a Brandon Bass type PF. My friend if you do not know who Brandon Bass is then you shouldnt be commenting in a basketball thread. Brandon Bass was a star at LSU came into the league and took time to find his niche..... Mavs gave him a chance and it paid dividens late in the season and in the playoffs as he seemed to be the only player that was consistent and effective. A cheap diamond in the rough they hope to continue to develop his game while they figure out the teams direction.

Good move. And he played in Minny last year, part of the KG trade. And Bass was a foward for the Mavs who had a good year last year. Not great. Green isnt great either but he is good and hopefully Kidd will give him the ball.

He was actually traded to Houston at the deadline for Kirk Snyder and someone got a 2nd rounder as well.

Green is young and athletic. This is a nice change from old heads like Eddie Jones.

I think anybody is better than Eddie Jones at this point. Can he catch alley oops from Kidd? I certainly hope so otherwise he is going to ride the bench.

I like Gerald Green. I think he will be one of those high schoolers that just needed some time to become a player in the League.

As Dolphinatik said, if you don't know who Bass is then you shouldn't even be commenting. I've liked Bass since the Mavs got him and he really exploded with potential last year. This is especially the case in the playoffs in which he was the ONLY bright spot of watching the Mavs defeat by the Hornets. Bass was consistant on both ends of the court and when he dunked he did so with enough authority that I could almost feel my HDTV shaking.
Hopefully Green will be a good fit and we can shift some of thes older guys out. Dallas needs youth. That is for sure.

The Mavs are not in the contender discussion any longer. That window has closed. Next headline.

a one year deal for anyone is NO BIG DEAL
Green (first of all ) isn't 6'8
but he is super athletic and YOUNG (22)
not going to affect whether they contend now....
but if he turns out to be decent, they may have something in the future
