The Washington Wizards yesterday offered unrestricted free agent guard Gilbert Arenas a six-year contract that would pay him between $125 million and $127 million, the maximum amount allowed under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, multiple sources said.

CRAZY... DOESN'T WORTH THAT BIG AMOUNT OF $... HE WOULD NOT BRING HIS TEAM TO CHAMPIONSHIP (NOT WITH JAMISON GETTING OLDER)... HE WILL CHOKE THE W.W. FOR YEARS...

I believe athletes are entitled to high paying contracts, but it's gotten to the point they can earn enough money in 6 or 7 years to enbale them to live in grand splendor for the rest of their lives.
From where I sit that is way, way, way beyond excessive!
...just my opinion.

Report Offensive CommentThats pretty much on par for what scorers like him get payed. The question is how far can his game take them and how good of a supporting cast can they surround him with.

Report Offensive CommentBD signs a manageable contract to work with the team and a friend in Brand.... which makes this contract look silly. Arenas is not a differencemaker and the Wiz even played better without him. No doubt he is skilled. 125 mil are Shaw in his prime, KG type number reserved for top players which I would not put Arenas in the top 5 or 10.

Report Offensive CommentThe must be something in the water in Washington. They have had the worst GM moves this side of the Clippers. From trading healthy from the draft of Calbert Cheney to the draft of Kwame Brown and now this. This is the same organization that paid Juwan Howard 100 million dollars. This organization is starting to make LA Clippers look like a world class organization. Clippers just signed Baron Davis for about 40 million dollars less. Now tell me, would you rather have Baron Davis or Gilbert Arenas?

Report Offensive CommentmaxwellNOTinformed: Ernie Grunfeld did a great job bringing Antwan, Caron and Gilbert in...they were HORRIBLE for like 8 years, before he came..didn't make the playoffs or won a playoff series but now they've been making it 3 years straight and will eventually move past the Cavs *fingers crossed*. The past 2 years they just weren't healthy, too many injuries. it's an offer for 127Mil w/ him having option to take less...to help w/ other free agents and the WW future. I mean if they let him go who are they going to start at PG???

Report Offensive CommentGilbert Arenas needs to average about 40 ppg, 8 rpg, and about 15 assists a game to make this worth it. He also needs to hit every game winning shot and making Jamison and Butler look incredible every night. The Wizards certainly can't afford anybody else if they sign Arenas to this deal. It's so stupid. How can you pay $125 million to a injury prone player?
bertchboy7 | 07/02/08, 09:07 AM
Report Offensive Comment$100M was absurd. Now $125M? Look where it got the Orlando Magic. But from Zero's point of view, he can always join the Spurs after his contract's over to get that ring. Because there is no way Wiz are going to win a championship for the next 6 years.

Report Offensive CommentI normally do not hate on a guy that's about to get paid but Gilbert is horribly overrated. That's a lot of money for someone who can barely stay healthy and lead his team out of the first round of the playoffs. Gilbert may put butts in the seats but how does that translate to the Wizards actually winning anything?

First of all, haven't heard that one before. Second of all this team actually played better with out Agent Zero. Isn't that how many playoff series they won with him Zero. Baron Davis a proven playoff performer signs for $65 mil. Zero reportedly to sign for $125 mil. That is reportedly 60 mil too much for a guy who hasn't proved he is 100% injury free. How many games has Zero missed anyway?

Report Offensive CommentHere are some salaries for the past season
KG- $22Mil
Shaq- $20mil (still banking off that huge contract he signed a couple years back when he was actually good and deserved this much)
Kobe Bryant - $19.5 Mil
Tim Dunacan - $19 Mil
Paul Pierce - $16.3 Mil
Amare and Yao - $13.7 Mil
Wade, Bosh, LBJ - $ 13 Mil
Besides Shaq who is outside of his prime, I would be willing to max and pay the $20mil+ for ay of these guys. GILBERT EFFING ARENAS?!?! Going to give him $21-22 Million a year?!?! you have to be kidding me.... I smell a Stephon Marbury $19Mil max bust contract bust. If this guy is gonna get paid more than Kobe, LBJ, Pierce, Duncan, Garnett there is no justice in the world of sports.

Not just live in grand splendor. These guys can buy small islands for what they are making. This is one idiotic paycheck. The bad thing is that this is how trends get started. It isn't always the biggest super stars that start this but someone like Arenas. He gets paid huge and then everyone better than him expects the same or more.
