Do Stars have edge for Avery?
Posted: Wednesday July 02, 2008 06:52AM ET
While much of the potential scoring help went off the board Tuesday on the first day of NHL free agency, the Stars were in discussions late into the evening to possibly acquire talented agitator Sean Avery, co-GM Brett Hull said. Dallas is among the suitors for the 28-year-old forward who had 15 goals and 18 assists in 57 games last season for the New York Rangers. He added four goals and three assists in eight playoff games. Avery lived with Stars co-general manager Brett Hull in 2002-03 when the two played for Detroit.

Avery wants to sign in a major market. If Dallas ends up his destination, that means most teams took a pass on him, which looks good on that donkey-hole.

When exactly did Avery have trouble off the ice? When injured the guy signs autographs in the cheap seats and attended every meet and greet the Rangers had last year. The only veteran not to miss an event.
And for those who are going to say how much he sucks the fact that so many teams want him means something.
Sather's an idiot. The Rangers record with Avery in the line up is astounding while without him they were way under 500.

Report Offensive CommentI agree Justin, Avery doesn't suck and he's a great player to have on a team but I'll be disappointed if he leaves the East. That's one or two less chances each year for Brashear to beat his a$$.

Report Offensive CommentAvery is an annoying little pest...on the ice...
Let's be realistic...the guy can play hockey and knowing the Rangers' record with and without him, he obviously brings something more to the team than the "I'm not touching you" personality.
It's very cool, (I guess) to sit here and bash the guy, make fashion magazine jokes and all the rest of it, but these GMs and coaches aren't playing with Monopoly money here. Especially in Bettman's (BETTMAN S***S) NHL, it isn't worth spending money on someone that can't play. And I daresay that most of those guys (excluding Garth Snow) have an idea about hockey abilities.
And Justin Cyder was dead on, they guy was up in the "blues seats" almost every game he was out. I hope Sather comes to his senses soon

Sean Avery is a pest that nobody wants yet everybody needs!

Report Offensive CommentI think the Stars could use some grit. I'm not an Avery fan by any means and I have no idea if his on ice antics carry over into the dressing room. He could be a positive influence or negative and I don't know him that well. All I know was what he pulled in the playoffs which I hated but had to give him credit for being creative and causing a mental melt down on the opposing goalie.

Report Offensive CommentThe Stars I saw playing the Wings in this year's playoffs had one of the best leaders I've seen in Brenden Morrow. Morrow will keep Avery in line on ice and Morrow's example will make Avery even better.
If Avery ends up in Dallas they will be even better than they were this year and that was pretty darn good in my opinion.

Report Offensive CommentI'm a closet Stars fan so I wouldn't mind this (used to live in Dallas).
The Stars already have Ott, their version of Avery, so man that would be ANNOYING!

Report Offensive CommentBrendan Morrow is one of my favorite players. You can find Ribiero shirts online but not Morrow shirts--that is INSANITY.

Report Offensive CommentI hope he stays in New York. He puts that spark into a team and some how finds a way to get the puck in the net. Any one that can take Marty off his game is worth it.
He reminds me of Esa Tikkanen, blowing kisses at people during the game. 4 yrs at $16 mil is not that bad, especially considering he puts up numbers similiar to Malone, and look what he got.
Rangers should keep him, but if they don't, they'll regret it.

Your club also used to have Derrien Hatcher and there was never a bigger thug in the league.
If you were lucky enough to land Avery, your club would be instantly better and you would soon learn to be glad he was on your team.

Report Offensive CommentBring Avery to the Pens! Then I'll have a good reason to like him... if the Pens bring Jarko Ruutu back as well, they'll easily have the best 1-2 agitators in the league!
