Agent: Pens to extend Malkin

The Penguins went 10 hours past the start of the free-agent signing period - noon Tuesday - without learning if right wing Marian Hossa or defenseman Brooks Orpik would continue their NHL careers in Pittsburgh. Chances are not one team official was even slightly frustrated with that development. Nothing could deflate the Penguins yesterday, not after they finalized terms on a desired multi-year contract extension with representatives for superstar center Evgeni Malkin. Neither the Penguins nor Malkin's agent, JP Barry, confirmed a deal was in place, but an announcement is expected this week.

Joy.....

July 2, 2008  08:34 AM ET

Cut Hossa loose (it's inevitable), sign Jagr and resign Orpik. I am REALLY hoping Ruutu stays...he surprisingly turned into a pretty good two-way player this past year

July 2, 2008  08:36 AM ET

bye bye cap room....going to be a 3-4 man team with role players leaving every year for the green. They'll pull in fans and revenue with the names they have...but the days of the Eastern finals are gone. 4th to 5th place finish in the East...out in second round of playoffs to a balanced team

For those who think the Pens are int rouble having Sid and Geno at these salaries, I simply say "Wake up!" 2 of the top 5 players in the league for the next 5 years. Hell, Brad Richards is making 7.8 million a year. If you think 20 goals is worth that, I'd like what you're smoking. In 2 years, these salaries will be a bargain!! 10 million a year for Sundin for 2 years?? Paleeze! See you in the finals next year.

July 2, 2008  09:27 AM ET

So, what now? Is it going to be just the two of them playing for the Penguins?

July 2, 2008  09:35 AM ET

NHL cap = 56.7 million.
Sid and Geno = 17.4 million
The cap will go up, the salaries will not. I'm tellin ya, in 2 years, these will be bargain salaries.

July 2, 2008  09:40 AM ET

LetsGoPens, I wasn't referring to the cap. I was thinking of all the supporting cast jumping ship and going elsewhere.

July 2, 2008  09:45 AM ET

DCruiser....."supporting cast"? Hossa was a rent-a-player. Malone, I like the guy, but we'll see his numbers next year and hear what the fans have to say about HIS salary compared to Malkin and Crosby (and their numbers).

So, what "supporting cast" were you referring to? I see Dupuis and Sykora stepping up big time.

July 2, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Supporting casts are easier to come by than legitimate elite players. Malone was going to go, we knew that. Hossa? We'll see. Roberts? Love him but too old. Orpik? Up in the air. Laraque? See ya later and thanks for the cap space now. There are still options out there.

July 2, 2008  09:52 AM ET

I wouldn't be counting on Sykora. Dupuis maybe.

I do agree that bit parts are easier to come by than blue chips but you still need them.

Barfo Ruutu needs to be kept.

No Roberts or Malone means they got a lot smaller.

Hosebag will not be missed.

Crosby+Malkin = Cup in the future!

GO PENS!

July 2, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Some, but not all, I believe are still out there: Doug Weight, Steve Rucchin, Kristian Huselius, Pavol Demetra, Sergei Brylin, Miro Satan and Markus Nasland.

July 2, 2008  10:00 AM ET

What a BIG waste of money. Fun to see such a quick decline for this team.

July 2, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Spoken like a true Flyers fan. Who won that last series again?? We'll enjoy the view of Philly in our rear view mirror. Malkin is better than anyone on your team!

July 2, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Phillydave....tsk, tsk....who did you guys sign? Can't quite remember the names......

July 2, 2008  10:15 AM ET

Anybody who thinks Markus Naslund is a good addition has NOT been paying attention. The guy is washed up. Steve Moore finished him off years ago.

July 2, 2008  10:16 AM ET

What I'm saying is you have to look to the future. MAF is going to arbitration this year...but if he continues to be the goalie he CAN be...you're gonna have to pay him....you need roleplayers that get a decent paycheck by NHL standards in order to keep them. You can't keep bringing in guys every year and expect consistancy. It's great to have a big engine but if you don't have the carbs or intakes you don't finish first

July 2, 2008  10:19 AM ET

LetsGoPens... I Agree 100%. Having Syd and Geno at those prices for the next 5 years is a B.A.R.G.A.I.N. Now I WISH we could keep playing/owning Philly for 8 games a season, rather than 6.

July 2, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Hey LetsGoPens...if you think Weight, Naslund, and Demetra are quality pickups...you got a lot of nerve asking for whatever anyone else is smoking
