Inside Bonds HOF ball deal

After a day of disparate explanations from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and the man who owns Barry Bonds's record-setting 756th home run ball, the controversial ball was driven to Cooperstown, N.Y., on Tuesday. It arrived around 7:45 p.m. When discussions between Marc Ecko, the fashion designer who purchased the ball in an online auction for $752,467, stalled on Tuesday, the Hall issued a statement saying that Ecko had changed his mind about donating the ball, which he had marked with an asterisk. "The owner's previous commitment to unconditionally donate the baseball has changed to a loan," the Hall said. "As a result, the Hall of Fame will not accept the baseball." But a few hours after the Hall's statement, Ecko issued one of his own in which he said that he was "surprised" by the Hall's stance. Ecko did not address whether he sought to adjust his donation to a loan and said that the "only open issue' was whether the Hall would be comfortable displaying the ball.

Mark Ecko is d@uche who makes horrible clothing.

My sister say same thing. It better to loan body, than give way for free. At five dollar per loan, who can argue?

July 2, 2008  09:19 AM ET

Don't trust the Hall. They will do whatever it takes to display the ball without showing the asterick. If they were accurate, they'd show the asterick and put a syringe next to the ball with a mock-up of Bonds' arse.

The HOF is better off not taking the ball. Besides, A-Rod is going to pass Bonds in the next decade, so the ball will lose all meaning. No one will want to remember Bonds' ball.

B*nds, Zzzzz.

July 2, 2008  10:28 AM ET

I don't mind if the ball is in the Hall of Fame. I just don't want Bonds there, even as a visitor. Keep out Sosa, McGwire, Palmeiro and those other ****-hats too.

I concur allstarz...who really gives a rats anus about this d.ou.che.bag and his balls.

Ecko obviously wanted tha ball with the asterisk to be displayed. And it is only fitting that it is. Bonds and the HOF may not appreciate it but all who observe it in Cooperstown can tell the story of how the record was broken with no class on one man's part and how classy the game was back in Hank Aaron's time.

That is not all that has shrunk. With as much stuff as he took he should have some shrinkage down there if you know what I mean.

I heard if you inject that gear into your butt instead of having an asterisk they will shrink up and possibly drop off ....

Marc Ecko pandered to the public by placing an asterisk on the ball.... a simple letter of explanation of why he bought it and his disgust is enough ....Just a pathetic fashion statement ,exactly like his clothes..... with logo's all over them .
overdone overdone wimp A/S male .

So the almighty "HALL" won't display a loaned ball but it will display it if it is theirs? Basically if you don't give us $700k we won't show it. Sounds a little snooty to me.

July 2, 2008  07:44 PM ET

He should design a new line of sportswear called HOF* ... he'd get an initial flurry of interest before it faded away.

July 2, 2008  11:56 PM ET

A shameless publicity stunt this was.

July 2, 2008  11:57 PM ET

Boycott Marc Ecko I will!
