Giants' McQuarters cuts dreads

When R.W. McQuarters walked into the Giants' locker room this spring, several teammates and team employees walked past him with a generic hello. Only later -- sometimes a few seconds, sometimes a few days -- did they approach him again with wide eyes. Along with a few other other defensive backs, McQuarters helped to sprout a trend that has taken hold among African-American cornerbacks and safeties in the N.F.L. -- a head of dangling dreadlocks, or "locks." On March 21, McQuarters had his first haircut since his rookie season -- nine years ago. So much hair came off that he had to get a new helmet, two sizes smaller.

Well! I can now sleep at night knowing that McQuarters cut his hair!

Honestly, this is a trend that should be noticed. With leagues cracking down on "bad" behavior, players are starting to question their image and marketability. For example, it's a lot easier to get an endorsement deal when you appeal to a larger fan base; not just the ones that laud the "thug" look and lifestyle.

If RW McQuarters cuts his dreads in the woods and nobody notices...does it make a sound?...or something like that

June 5, 2007  01:53 PM ET

Lukas when you mention a larger base is that code for White people. I guess we are still in an era where dreads or cornrows mean you better clutch your purse when i'm walking by?

June 5, 2007  02:21 PM ET

i'd rather not get into it because 5 seconds later someone will be whining about pulling the race card but it is funny that white guys with long hair are "pretty boys" or "hippies" or "rockstars" but a black person with long hair is a thug.

all i can say is hopefully it's not a huge majority view or something we need to go on about. just one very ignorant person named "Lukas."

****. dreads look cool under football helmets. no matter who. they looked especially cool on rw, and being a niner fan, im a little upset about his desicion to cut his hair. anyway, 9 years without a haircut is a long time!!

June 5, 2007  02:36 PM ET

Busta Rhymes went about seventeen years before cutting his dreads a year ago. He'd been growing them since he was seventeen years old.

OK SAMPSON, I MEANT URRRRRGHHH MCQUARTERS, WHERE IS DELILAH??????WILL U LOSE YOUR STRENGTH
THIS SEASON?

This just in! Strahan just brushed his two front teeth! Front page material baby!

He later lost both of those teeth to his wife in the divorce.

June 5, 2007  05:03 PM ET

You'd have to be nuts to run around with dreads like that! Are you telling me no opposing player's going to yank on those things? I would! And I probably wouldn't get flagged, either. Shoots, I think they look good - but they'd be a definite strategic disadvantage.

Sort of like wearing an Eagle uniform.

haircut or no haircut, he still sucks!!!!

June 5, 2007  08:22 PM ET

i forgot about these guy after his bears days

June 6, 2007  12:40 AM ET

Guess he learned from the other three players with locks who were suspended for half the season. This is a big story for those pigeonholers. KEEP CLUCKING.

June 6, 2007  08:27 AM ET

The reason he cut his dreads was for safety, not for style or public perception. I guess most of you didn't catch the fact that he had to get a new helmet - 2 sizes smaller. With the NFL trying to crack down on concussions, it only makes sense that players wear properly-fitted helmets to protect themselves. All that hair doesn't protect - it gets in the way and prevents the helmet from doing its job. Yeah, dreads look cool. But how cool will they look if you can't keep your tongue in your mouth? Good move by Mc25.
