Astros to let Jennings go?

The Rockies are strafed daily for trading Jason Jennings rather than paying him. Now comes word Houston probably won't sign him, either, believing his $12 million-a-year price tag too high.

I find it ironic that he receives the trade, and after one decent start, and one horrendous start, he has irritation in his pitching elbow. I know this post might not receive any comment unless the comment comes from an Astros fan, but some insight from other baseball fans would be great!!!

I don't see him signed to any quality contract, but then again, there are no top prospects in the farm system. Jason might be the only quality pitcher the Astros have, and Drayton McClane might spend the money based on what he seees during the rest of the season. Matt Albers could come back up, but his mechanics are still being reworked in the minors. Brandon Backe is coming back from his devastating injury (Tommy John Surgery), but even he has been hit with a set back.

Beyond that, there is not that much sitting out there. Drayton (owner), needs to spend some money and get some quality pitching to match up with Carlos "100 Million" Lee. Pitching has been the staple of the Astros, but this year has been horrendous. Even without Andy or Roger, the offense has and still is ugly.

The three bright spots for this year have been Roy "Whoop Your A** with a Fastball" Oswalt, Rookie Chris Sampson, and possible Rookie of The Year Hunter Pence. Carlos Lee leads the league in RBI's, but he also leads the entire league in hitting in double plays (13 and counting).

"Jason might be the only quality pitcher the astros have..." WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I suppose you have never heard of Roy FREAKING Oswalt, yeah all he's done is win 20 games twice in the last three years!

June 5, 2007  10:12 AM ET

awr, I think he was referring to the fact that hes the only quality arm besides Oswalt, since Oswalt is a given ace. Thats at least what I deduced from his post. If hes an Astros fan, I doubt hes minimizing the caliber of Roy 'Freaking' Oswalt.

June 5, 2007  10:13 AM ET

WHOA awr2056....Read the article I posted before you starting asking questions like that. I highlighted Roy with a pair of " ", and furthermore the Astros don't have any true quality outside of Roy (veteran wise). I should look at all of my verbage next time, but look at my post name..That should tell it all...I will take a negative 1 for not reading my post a little better....

June 5, 2007  12:16 PM ET

I hate to say it but maybe Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd actually made a good move not signing JJ to a huge deal. This is why we traded him, because he wanted market value, usually this bites the Rocks in the **** but not this time.

June 5, 2007  12:21 PM ET

I have to agree with you Realone....I thought this was a cr@ppy deal from the word go, and despite the pitchers not looking too good on the Rockies (the ones the Astros gave up for Jason), they were good prospects none the less. Plus the added benefit of Willy T. was something I could not understand...I guess we will have to wait and see.

June 5, 2007  12:48 PM ET

Taveras is helping us with that speed and Bucholz has got some heat, Hirsch needs to do something tonight against your A's or he'll go back to the pen. JJ is a really good pticher, he just never seems to get help from his teammates. Happened in Colorado, I believe he had the worst run support of any starting NL pitcher last year, looks like it's the same in Houston. I do think that Jennings will give you guys quality starts for the rest of the season, although it is already to late for the A's.

June 5, 2007  12:57 PM ET

That's the truth about being too late, although I would like to think they can pull it off like years past...I don't know, but we will see. I would like for one of our teams to do well, only becuase I cheer for the Astros, and there are some former Astros on the Rockies...Hopefully one team could pull it off...

June 5, 2007  01:40 PM ET

The Astros historically have not made good decisions with pitchers. Nolan Ryan? Yeah i know, it was a billion years ago, but it still hurts. Hey I hear we can get Jose Lima pretty cheap.

June 5, 2007  01:41 PM ET

Speaking of Colorado, is Darryl Kyle still alive and kicking?

June 5, 2007  01:43 PM ET

Jose LIma----------------It's LLLLIIIIIIMMMMMAAAAAAA Time again folks.... Does anyone think that Zambrana is a possibility??? Stop and think about this one....Drayton has the money to pay for him, Zambrano is pretty young, and Drayton loves to have competitors on his team???

June 5, 2007  02:06 PM ET

Woody Williams was always a bad deal, who cares if he went to UH, at least it's a short-term thing. But Jennings was even worse, if they can't sign him cheap at the end of the season. But I think Drayton will make Purpura re-sign him for mad cash because he went to Baylor. Sweet Willy T, and Jason Hirsch are going to be good and they were cheap. Agh! Purpura purplexes me.
On another note, should traded Mo Ensberg at the end of the '05 season for pitching.
As far as "Ears" Everett and "Pretty Boy" Ausmus go, I'd've liked to see them go years ago.
There has to be a way to get Dontrelle here right, please say there is, please!!!

June 5, 2007  02:31 PM ET

why are tim and phil still under payroll for the astros? if not for horrible deals (minus carlos lee) and stupid clubhouse decisions, the astros might be a decent team. but who could know...

June 5, 2007  02:34 PM ET

and right now, chris sampson is a better pitcher than jennings. woody sucks. wandy sucks. so we have a 2 man rotation. good thing we wasted brad lidge on the bench while he dominated. ugh......

June 5, 2007  03:30 PM ET

why would you get rid of the guy whose given the stros 3 strait winning seasons their only play off series win and world series berth. If youv'e been watching the past two years, you will notice some constants. The stros will struggle at the plate phil will change his line up card daily and some time around the all star break he will get constancy out of his offense and they will start playing .600 baseball and sneak in the playoffs. The difference this year is they lack dominate pitching. No one wanted to face houston in a short series facing the "three headed monster". I can see the stros making a late run in a weak division but if there going to go further they need one more dominate pitcher.

June 5, 2007  04:30 PM ET

I see them limping along to another lackluster year. Sorry Stros fans, you got swept in the only shot your getting in this lifetime. Maybe when Biggio gets his 3k and retires, we can clear some cap money for a pitcher or two.

June 5, 2007  05:03 PM ET

Since when does baseball have a salary cap? Never mind I see your logo. Stick to football their is only 16 games to entertain your short attention spand. A lot can happen in 162 game season

June 5, 2007  10:38 PM ET

the stros need to get a little younger. sign jj, trade berkman, everett, and wandy to rangers for teixeira, and kinsler.

June 5, 2007  11:02 PM ET

Picking up Zambrano is no different than picking up Terrell Owens or Daryl Strawberry. Lotsa baggage. I love all of 'em as ballplayers (as a fan) but when you have those types of charcters inthe clubhouse, life (as a ballplayer) is a bear and the focus on winning as a team gets blurred.

June 6, 2007  09:29 AM ET

Yep that was a major flub Milo. Don't get testy. Alot can happen in a long season. One thing that cant happen is the Astros becoming a good team. Throw all the immature barbs you like.
