Cubs grooming Samardzija for relief

The Cubs are closely monitoring the progress of pitching prospect Jeff Samardzija, who has pitched well in his first two starts at Triple-A Iowa. "Actually, he has been throwing the ball better in Triple-A than in Double-A ball," manager Lou Piniella said. "Maybe if we move him up to the big leagues, he'll even throw the ball better." Piniella was laughing when he said it, but speculation is the former Notre Dame football/baseball star is being groomed to come up later in the year and provide the Cubs with another power arm in the bullpen.

samardzija spell check.. is the second coming of _____________. nd guys after the glory days, have always been overrated, regardless of sport.

^^^ ...except for that Joe Montana guy...

July 3, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Does he pitch with the helmet on?

July 3, 2008  10:05 AM ET

I think he'll just want the helmet for when Piniella comes out to yell at him.......or when Zambrano is trashing the dugout.

July 3, 2008  10:25 AM ET

If he should make it to the pros I wouldn't want to be the announcer trying to pronounce that name correctly !!!

July 3, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Too bad Harry Caray isn't around any longer......it would be great listening to him trying to pronounce that name. It'd be even better than when he used to try and say "Andres Gallaraga"

Idk about this.. Just because he is a hot commodity doesn't mean he's ready for the Bigs. I've seen his numbers before, and I wasn't really impressed, I am sure there are better prospects down there, they just want to bring up the name that people are more familar with instead of 'Billy Petrick'. Oh well, he won't pan out (this year anyway) and he won't make the roster when it really counts.

From Cheese Burger Charlie to Lou... this guy swill have years of thearpy waiting on him.

July 3, 2008  05:04 PM ET

So? He could go to the Bears and start.

July 3, 2008  07:59 PM ET

Grooming him?

Grooming him?

July 3, 2008  07:59 PM ET

How about starting with the mullet!

July 3, 2008  07:59 PM ET

Chop off that mullet with one swoop of my lightsaber I will!

July 3, 2008  08:00 PM ET

Shame will I fell if I slip and chop his head off,

July 4, 2008  01:19 PM ET

I know baseball pays more, but I'd rather see him catch TD's once a week than pitch once a week

I was shocked when he chose baseball over football....he might of been a top ten pick in football.
