Jagr's return to Rangers unlikely

Jaromir Jagr clearly believes the Rangers have planned to go in a different direction from the Jagr-led one that took the team from league-wide laughingstock to playoff participant over the last three years. While it appears as if re-signing Jagr might now be the logical final piece to a reconfigured Rangers puzzle, it is growing difficult to see how the future Hall of Famer can bring himself to return. Their last offer to him was for one year at $6 million - a far cry from the two years and $15 million he proposed. He has more lucrative offers from the Edmonton Oilers and Omsk-Avangard of Russia's Continental League.

This team has more holes now than it did at the end of the season.....

July 3, 2008  08:32 AM ET

With Sundin on the fence the Rangers pretty much HAVE to sign Jagr. Top forward pickings are pretty slim now.

July 3, 2008  08:48 AM ET

Jagr to the Pens seems most likely.

The Rangers have covered their bases by acquiring Zherdev, and don't have the salary to entice Jaromir after Redden's big payday.

The signings aren't over. And think before you speak.

Power play QB: plugged
Fast point producing winger to play with Gomez: plugged
Big hard-hitting depth winger(s): plugged

The farm looks mighty fine, maybe a little ripe for the picking, but there will be call-ups.

They lack the big name point producing winger they had last season in Jagr, and a Beukeboom-like defenseman, but for the reasons above I will have to respectfully disagree with you.

I have to say, I'm sorry to see Tyutin go, but I like the roster on paper so far. The team is young, for the most part. Now if we can get them to remember to actually shoot on the power play, I really like their chances. I was at the parade in 1994, I'd like to go to another one.

Come to Butthead Jaromir.

I mean Deadmonton....

But sadly, not enough bright lights, too much travel, etc.

July 3, 2008  10:28 AM ET

It seems the offer from the Pens is more than a rumor... Anybody know smore?

July 3, 2008  10:35 AM ET

I dunno any more on that rumor cmh, but it certainly seems like a it would be a good fit. The Pens could use a productive winger to put with Crosby, especially taking into account the loss of Hossa. They've got cap space to work a deal, but they probably can't offer as much as Omsk.

July 3, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Butthead, Hank? That's a new one! I'm beginning to think you don't like Edmonton, lol

The Rangers seem to have given up on Jagr, and vice versa. That's a shame I think. I can't see him in Oiler blue, can you? Omsk ... Pittsburgh ... Edmonton ....all this speculation hurts the brain.

July 3, 2008  10:37 AM ET

Jagr was a heaven send during his stay but it's time to move on. the team is getting aster and younger. They clearly want Drury and Gomez to become the leaders of this team starting now and for years to come. Two solid veteran leader still in their prime with a group of hungry kids and veteran blue line leadership in Roszival and Redden. Throw in Lundqvist and this looks like success. it might take a little time for chemistry but this is a long term and short term success plan. I like it. Keep up the solid off-season! I will deeply miss Avery though.

July 3, 2008  10:42 AM ET

I think the Pens contingency plan was Jagr, but now that they locked Malkin up and have to lock up MAF, IDK. If Jagr wanted to slight the Rangers and Sather's lowball offer, I could see the two sides working out something. But I don't have him going to the Rangers (unless Sather changes his tune) or Pens. IDK where he goes though.

Spiny, don't worry the PP will be much better. Redden will QB that. And Renney will stress that they have to shoot when lanes open (nobody will be spoonfeeding Jagr even if he does come back. Rosi certainly won't.). I liked Tyutin a lot, but we got the better of the deal. Got rid of soft Backman and got a sick scoring winger who is FAST!

Come to Butthead? You don't know where that's from? Did I need to mention Cornholio? No reflection on Deadmonton intended.

I just liked saying Come to Butthead.

One thing about the Malkin deal, it doesn't kick in until next year. He will play this season on his rookie contract. That leaves the Pens a pretty good chunk of change to offer Jags on a deal similar to the one Hossa took with Wings.

I still don't think it is a good idea. They need more than one winger now.
Better to spread the cash among a couple of lesser stars and not try and build an all star line.

July 3, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Huh huh, you said "butthead" ....
:)

Hank Kingsley

but will they have tp for his b*nghole?

That's better.

cmh_phx | 07/03/08, 10:28 AM

According to Pittsburgh sources, there has NOT been any offer...just some talk between the parties.

I hope to God that Mario doesn't push this into fruition. He...of all people knows what a baby Jagr can be.
