Rutgers loading up commitments

Another day, another top recruit for Rutgers football. Abdul Smith, a defensive back from the Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, Pa., became the 19th player to verbally commit to coach Greg Schiano for the 2009 freshman class. Smith said what sealed it for him was his hourlong conversation with Schiano, which happened after all the tours and brief talks with other members of the football program. Smith -- a two-way star who last fall had 60 tackles and four interceptions, and rushed for 930 yards and 10 touchdowns -- will likely be a cornerback for the Scarlet Knights, joining an incoming secondary that is already stocked with talented players. The 6-0, 182-pound Smith chose Rutgers over 22 other schools. He said the finalists were Maryland, Pittsburgh and the Scarlet Knights.

I guess Schiano doesn't mention its the #1 college in America for STD's. This program is straight back in the toilet the day Schiano leaves

July 3, 2008  07:35 AM ET

i guess, people fell in love with how "charming" jersey is after seeing the sopranos.

What the hell is going on at Rutgers ?! I'm not a Rutgers fan or hater, but what Schiano is doing this recruiting season is just incredible. Gotta give the man props.

July 3, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Definitely, Schiano is recruiting like a madman.

like HollyBull said, what will happen to these recruits if Schiano leaves? Maybe he'll go to Penn St., maybe he won't.

July 3, 2008  12:18 PM ET

JoePa Already said his successor is on his staff. So I dont think RR is going anywhere, unless JoePa didnt take his crazy pills that morning..

July 3, 2008  12:31 PM ET

Greg is staying, as are his recruits from a potential Top 15, definite Top 25 class if he keeps it up. Enough said. The man knows how to recruit. Even if he left, I don't think that all would leave since many have said that they also really like their position coaches, assuming that they stay. Time to get used to it. Rutgers is becoming a major player and is getting the recruits that would have never considered them. RU is even stealing recruits from eastern PA and South Jersey, both longtime PSU hot spots.

Are these kids getting free trips to Atlantic City or something? Jersey is the armpit of America

July 3, 2008  02:22 PM ET

i love people who hate on Jersey dont know **** about what goes on there.....Great Job Greg keep it up!!

July 3, 2008  03:10 PM ET

If Rutgers keeps it up, they seem to be the next powerhouse of the big east

July 3, 2008  05:59 PM ET

Why is there a headline everytime Schiano lands another recruit? He is building a nice class, but not anywhere near the class Ohio State is building and Rutger's get a lot more press. Ohio State now has 15, 4 and 5 stars in a class of 23 compared to Rutger's 6, 4 stars in a calss of 19.

Rutgers is the 4th cleanest STD school in the country, Hollybull. That makes you 0 for 2 ony our post. Thanks for playing. http://www.trojancondoms.com/ArticleDetails.aspx?ArticleId=1

It's Rutgers, not like it's a good program. Shianno is a good coach, he won't stay forever. Don't get to used to him, because he will end up doing just what RichRod did.

July 4, 2008  05:17 PM ET

HellOOOO Penn State!! a match made in heaven indeed...food for thought-Schiano was on Joepa's staff for 5 or so years in the 90's.

Really, Yoda? Every time?

i am beginning to wonder where all of you rutger fans were for all of the decades when this team was absolutely trampled by teams like a doormat? i remember seeing a special from espn last year when rutgers was stunning the football world. what was even MORE stunning was the fact that 90 percent of the people from the new york and new jersey areas had NEVER even heard of the teams' MASCOT much less who they were and WHERE they played! NOW all of you bandwagon fans are jumping on board and trying to stake your claim like you have won a national championship or something! you sound like a big ten team trying to convince the nation that your conference is THE powerhouse as you say teams like indiana belongs with the big dogs. keep dreaming people. you haven't won ANYTHING yet as your program is just A STEPPING stone for this coach to go to a more prestigious program. i give it 3 YEARS and butgers football will return to its former state...

Southernmarine25:
Must have been a fun 4th since you're on a chat board talking sh** at 1:30am. Rutgers gets a lot of press because its in the greater NYC area and has a wealthy fan base. If you read the posts on here all the Rutgers fans have said is basically 'good job' and 'hooray for our team.' All the negative posts come from the haters. This program was in the gutter forever and never got any press, thats why you never heard from Rutgers fans. That special from ESPN last year was the Louisville-Rutgers game when they asked random people in TImes Square if they had ever heard of Rutgers. Rutgers is in New Jersey, not New York where Times Square is, and most of the people who aren't tourists in Times Square at any given day couldn't even tell you their own name or where the Knicks play, let alone something about Rutgers. Enjoy your crawfish and domestic violence, I'll be up here in the civilized world. By the way, its spelled Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey, not butgers. You'll be hard pressed to find a Rutgers fan talking sh** on other teams articles, we have class.

Gotta love the jealous rants from those outside the Garden State or perhaps those in the state that missed the bandwagon... The excitement in Piscataway is REAL, and GREAT for New Jersey and long suffering Rutgers fans... best yet is that there is NO STOPPING IT in sight no matter how much the jealous want to hope it ends soon!!

Go RU!!!

July 5, 2008  05:53 PM ET

Yea for Rutgers loading up on those 3 star recruits....that's all they will need to win the Big East!

July 5, 2008  05:57 PM ET

Schiano to Penn State? It would be interesting. In the Big East you just need to "chop wood" but in the Big Time Big Ten he'll need to be a wood craftsman.
