How Red Wings landed Hossa

When Marian Hossa became an unrestricted free agent Tuesday, Red wings general manager Ken Holland called Hossa's agent, Ritch Winter (also the agent for former Wings goalie Dominik Hasek) and offered a long-term deal. That, however, was scuttled because Hossa was getting staggering long-term offers from several other teams, including Pittsburgh. One rumor had the Oilers offering Hossa nine years and $81 million. Wednesday morning, Winter called Holland while he was at a Mobil gas station and said Hossa was willing to work out something for one year. The Wings, in turn, got Hossa to agree to take just a touch less than Nicklas Lidstrom, whose $7.45 million salary serves as the team's individual cap number. Both Hossa and Holland said they hope this can evolve into a long-term relationship. The Wings, though, have to keep money free to re-sign Zetterberg and Johan Franzen, both of whose contracts expire next summer.

What happend to all the Pens hype. "THIS TEAM IS GOING TO BE TOGTEHER A LONG TIME" It looks like the Pens fans have more faith in that team than it's own player's. Don't start comparing them to the Oiler teams of Gretzky just yet.

So now that Hossa is in Detroit do you think they'll be able to sell out some games next season?

July 3, 2008  07:52 AM ET

Can Detroit sell out some games? I don't think it was Detroit who almost left their city because the fans wouldn't show up to support them. The Pens couldn't get anyone for years up until they got good again. Quick lesson for all of you Pens fans, you are not good fans just because you show up when your team is on top.

HAHAHAHAHA......the people of Pittsburgh are such fairweather fans.

So much for your dynasty. HAHAHAHAHA

July 3, 2008  08:02 AM ET

Detroit has been in the top 5 for attendence for the 8 years .. I pretty sure Pitsburgh hasnt even been in the top 10 ....

GO PIRATES!!!!

HAHAHAHAHA

July 3, 2008  08:40 AM ET

DurkDiggler... thats all you got? Can the Wings sell out home games? The Pittsburgh Penguins almost left the city!! They STILL owe Lemieux money from when he was PLAYING! The only reason the fans were paying attention to them was because they were in the playoffs and going pretty far. Let's see the attendance next season when they struggle again.

July 3, 2008  08:41 AM ET

And they will struggle.

HAHAHAHAHA

No dynasty for shitsburgh!

Still the dumbest contract decision EVER by a UFA.

He better not get injured.

July 3, 2008  08:49 AM ET

He probably has all the money he needs, he just wants to win The Cup. No chance of doing that in shitsburgh.

July 3, 2008  08:55 AM ET

LOL, so you guys are on the Pens fans for not going to games when they were bad? How come it was so easy for the Pens fans to get playoff tickets? Detroit fans don't even show up when the team is in the Cup Finals.
And as far as the team leaving, there were debt and ownership issues, forcing Craig Patrick to dismantle the team. It had nothing to do with the fans.
And Utley, those stats are skewed because Mellon Arena only holds 17K, so the Pens sold out EVERY game last season and aren't in the top ten.

I think the 91 and 92 Pens already did that bud

Still the dumbest contract decision EVER by a UFA.

Why's that? More than likely, barring injury, he'll get his Cup and then be in position to command an even more lucrative, long-term contract. I don't particularly like it, but that's business.

July 3, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Im pretty sure Pittsburgh wouldnt let any1 from the Detroit area buy tickets for playoff games at the Mellon arena! And refused to let any1 not from Pittsburgh buy squid! ****!

July 3, 2008  09:00 AM ET

Another reason why the Wings are the NHL's top franchise. HOCKEYTOWN!

July 3, 2008  09:06 AM ET

Like I said Durk... Pittsburgh was a hair away from moving out of Pittsburgh altogether and like you said, they have too much DEBT! They still owe Mario cash and DEBT comes from two things... people not showing up to games for the past 10 years and the team not doing squat in that same time span.

The Pens will be nothing more than a speed bump next season.

By the way. It's nice to be argueing with you again. I've been away for a while...LOL!

July 3, 2008  09:09 AM ET

Suddenly it's rip the Pens b/c Hossa decided to go? We expected that anyway. Same with Malone. As far as the Pens not letting anyone not from Pgh buy tickets...that's BS plain and simple. Anyone that thinks the Pens are done with Crosby, Malkin, Staal and Fleiry in the mix is an IMBECILE! Not to mention that there will be loads of cap space in the next couple years b/c Sid and Geno at 8.7 mil will seem like chump change then.

July 3, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Ok, thats b/s! Whatever! I'd expect a Pens fans to say that! I seen the ticketmaster page! It stated that only the states listed were aloud to buy the tickets!

July 3, 2008  09:13 AM ET

I noticed when the Red Wings won the Cup in game 6 in shitsburgh, Pen fans were booing. When the Conn Smyth was awarded to Zetterburg, Pen fans were shouting for it to go to Cindy Crosby. Shitsburgh fans are so classless. Now you wont have a dynasty.
